Do you think they help shape your world or perspectives or are they just a nuisance to you?

Depends because I fluctuate.

Two extremes and in-between I've been;
It generally becomes all-pros with no dowsides when I happened to able to process and discern, multiple unfiltered and intense sensations at once in all directions, with the essential internal resource for a threshold and balanced state for processing definitely offers a lot of insight.
As opposed to unprocessed and unresolved into overwhelm, stress, confusion, pain, distractions, distortions, competing and sapping for mental resources and energy, all nuisance and inconvenience...

YES!! !! You have spoken my thoughts that I couldn't word myself, lol. Thank you very much.
Usually, the unprocessed ones come from being around other people, from being in different stores, going outside, etc. Then I come home and am screwed for a few hours.
But at other times, I get a lot of mental clarity about certain topics and subjects.

Do you think intelligence can come from your ability to gain insight?

I'm highly sensitive to bright light and sunshine, so I spend most of my time indoors with blackout curtains, candles and dim coloured lighting. It's allowed me to be much more relaxed and to have a mellow outlook on life, instead of rushing about in the fray of daytime.

Same :( But in the near future, I need to go out and attend classes and interact with classmates, I hope it won't be too hard.
I'm happy you've found solutions.

My sensitivity to sudden loud noise has always been a problem for me, especially when I was younger. When I was a kid whenever I went to a house where there was a dog I would keep my fingers in my ears if I was in the same room as the dog because I was worried about it barking. But when I got to my 20s I seemed a bit more mellowed at the sound of dogs barking.
But there are other sudden loud noises that make me anxious as an adult, like bells and sirens.

I have some clothes sensitivities too, particularly with tags. They do become a problem, as some tags leave a scratchy bit even after cutting or ripping them out. Some tags are huge and I don't see why such large tags are necessary.

Both. If set on a specific task with no pressure I am able to observe and process sensory input often finding things that others have missed. But I still find my sensitivities to be mostly a nuisance. The strange looks that I get as I retreat to my truck for my earmuffs say it all.

It is cool you are aware of when you are able to gain more insight.

I wear noise cancelling headphones when I go to the grocery stores often, no shame :)

I do alright in grocery stores, but i usually go near closing time so not so many people. My biggest problem at the grocery is the cleaning aisle. The smells overwhelm me to the point that I can not breathe and I must make a quick departure from the area.

Not to be a pessimist but in all honesty it's 1000% a nuisance. Makes it harder to get a job, be liked, be rich, or have anything nice whatsoever! So NO nothing's good about it and the best solution sadly is to pretend you don't have it.

It's a huge nuisance, doubly so for being inescapable.

On the other hand, having to deal with it all the time, I learn to cope or at least endure.

Contrast with a NT who hardly ever experiences overload, and when they finally do, they FREAK OUT because they have no idea of what's going on or how to cope.

Every cloud has a silver lining, but it can be hard to find.

Yes, I agree, it's very hard to be physically truly functional in the world for me, as well, since it is hard being out and about.

Yes, the knowledge that it's always going to be there makes me think my life is going to be very long....and hard to endure.

I am fifty years old, and it has been my experience that the longer one copes and endures, the better one gets at coping and enduring.

Today things are still hard, but now I can laugh at nuisances which would have melted me down twenty years ago.

Keep working at it, and you will get stronger, and working at it will itself become second nature. It is very empowering.

Thank you for reminding me! I am definitely not in extremely strong strong fear like I used to be.

Overload definitely has no pros.

Sensitivity makes me satisfied with very little—I don't have to constantly be going out or listening to radio/music/TV for stimulation. I don't have to rely much on other people and things for satisfying sensory experiences, and I don't have to spend time or money seeking those experiences. Simple things like staring at a pond are quite pleasurable. I don't have to worry about noise complaints from my neighbors.
