I'm confused...my speech used to be fine until recently. I keep on forgetting words berfore I say them, making me slur my speech or stutter. People are starting to notice this, and it is not helping me at work or at school. While I admit that I am afraid to mention this to my parents (I have just been avoiding talking to them overall), is this related to AS? I have read that there are no language delays (this is recent though, so it couldn't be considered a delay, could it?). Help!

Hey :D

Yes; your problems can definitely be related to Asperger's! As you get older anxiety might become more of a feature for you - this is often the culprit behind stuttering, etc. When anxious I speak like a dunce! If you don't feel comfortable telling your Mum and Dad about this issue, talk to your family doctor or psychiatrist. It can be treated with counselling therapy and sometimes medication.

All the Best - :D :D :D

For me, this problem seems to have been induced by bumping my head a few too many times (yes, I'm incredibly clumsy). What's more psychological factors seem to play a role, although the occasionally very long pauses and absolute inability to find the words and phrases for what I'm thinking indicates neurological damage. I didn't always have this problem, either. Now it seems I really have to focus on making myself sound good if I don't want my voice to come out absolutely screwed up.

That sounds like me. I think all my head slamming when I was younger might have done something to me too.

Yea, my speech use to be a little messed up during junior high for me also. Likely from the numerous time I fell on my head and one event when my sister landed on it. Ouch!! Its usually not a problem for me today.

I've always had a weird lilt to my voice -- before Asperger's, I wasn't sure what it might be. I also used to talk very formally and straightforward but now I color things up more.

If you continue to slur and stutter into a severe direction, though, I STRONGLY encourage you to see a medical professional. Sometimes there is an early onset of neurological disease and problems that are *not* Asperger's that should be checked out ASAP. You know your body best.

If it progressively gets worse, and increases in severity, seek medical advice.

But I have noticed times where my speech is a little slurry, or I stumble/mumble words. This seems to last for short periods, and probably ties into stress, stimulation, and the fact the brain is a everchanging organ.

I tend to stutter whenever somebody starts doing the 20 question routine with me. If people didn't pressure me to finnish talking when I'm comming up with my next word, than I wouldn't have this problem.

KtMcs, that sounds like my son.... he gets stuck on his words...
it is almost uncontrollable like a miss fire somewhere... this happens from time to time; sometimes days in a row sometimes not, cometimes wont happen for awhile..
But, today I learned that palilalia is the name to this. here is the definition of palilalia. It is found in various neurological disorders; tourettes, the spectrum, traumatic brain injuries,etc...

Palilalia, a disorder of speech characterized by compulsive repetitions of utterances has been found in various neurological and psychiatric disorders. It has commonly been interpreted as a defect of motor speech;
a speech defect marked by abnormal repetition of syllables, words, or phrases. Also, this is a language disorder in which there is severe verbal perseveration.(like my son saying certain words, or phrases hundreds of times a day......)

I have a lot of trouble with speech sometimes myself.
My words will be slurry and mispronounced, and sometimes I will switch words around or make new words that don't really make sense...LOL
Half the time I dont know I'm doing it, cause I can't remember what I said. :) Then I realize people are like, "hmmm...what?"
Argh, I suppose thats one reason why I don't try to initiate many conversations too!
I dont think it has to do with anxiety, although part of it may be...cause it happens more if I'm in a stressful situation, but... I still can't push the words out properly if I'm sitting alone reading a passage from a book.
It's very frustrating, I know :)

I can be very articulate if I'm talking about things I'm obsessed with but if I haven't planned what I'm talking about or face an unexpected question I start stuttering and stumbling. I've also noticed that I have the annoying tendency to end a sentence with 'and' or 'but'. Anyone else do this?

I have trouble with stuttering, slurring, mumbling, and mispronouncing words as well. In Asperger's it is a common trait, and also the effect of anxiety and stress on the ability to speak can't be underestimated either.

Sometimes I start stammering if I'm pressed but I'm usually good at speaking really fast if I'm on a truckload of ideas being delivered off the top of my head. It's okay to speak slowly and clearly though -- especially if you come off sounding like a wise sage ;)
