If you don't understand what someone has said and you say "What do you mean?" and they answer "Don't worry about it" do you suddenly feel like life stops until you find out what the person meant? Why do people get annoyed when I ask them what they mean and why do they find it so hard to rephrase what they said so I understand it?

If someone asked me "What do you mean?" I would rephrase it as many times as I could until they understand, I would even draw it or act it out if necessary.

I'm on the other end of that sometimes because I use a big vocabulary and sometimes my conversation partner doesn't know the words. Sometimes when it doesn't matter for them to understand, I may say "never mind".

Is it really that annoying? If so, I'll stop doing it--goodness knows I do enough annoying things as it is.

I'm being a bit of a hypocrite with this:

I must repeat silently to understand what people say. I never ask people to repeat themselves. It would be ridiculously often that I'd have to ask. Everybody would think I was stupid or didn't hear fine and react like that, which would overload me.

Yet, I also cannot bring myself to repeat myself for others. The prospect of saying it twice unplanned is making me falter, especially because of the interruption for when they ask me to repeat myself, too hard, forget it.

I have Auditory Processing problems, so I'm constantly asking people what they said.

I just wish people would say what they mean simply and briefly, so I didn't have to work so hard at undestanding what they're getting at. Conciseness earns big :star:s from me, especially when I'm already overloaded.

yeah, i dont understand things alot of the times, so i end up asking people to repeat things over and over again till i feel like its annoying and i just go with it... sometimes ill figure out what theyve said after its had time to echo around in my head a bit XD also, i really REALLY hate repeating myself, and i tend to get horribly annoyed :/

it gets even worse if my mom has told m to do some chore or another and makes it reallyvauge, like last night, "go through this box of stuff" and im like "... what?" cause she didnt really specify... i mean, 'going through' a box could mean anything, i could 'go through' and sort everything, i could 'go through' and throw everything away, i could 'go through' everything and put it all away, i could 'go through' everything and throw it all out on the porch if i felt thats what she meant. apparently i was being a crybaby for asking for an explaination... though i wasnt crying at all

happens to me all the time, over and over, i hate when people go "nevermind" about something and leave me just there, it's like, i feel like they're saying "it's too much for you to understand", and most of the times they just won't say it or explain. (then i just put on my "evil eyes" and stop talking to anyone)

the otherway around, i always want them to know exactly what i'm saying, and sometimes i might get technical or such about the theme, then, most of the times people get bored.

summary, my only friends are those who have survived that until now, those who can rephrase things and can hear things all over again and try and understand it

was going to include it in my last post but got on a topic away from it... usually when someone says nevermind when im trying to get them to repeat, ill pester them FOREVER untill they repoeat themselves. depending on how well i know the person, ill end up poking, lightly tugging on hair, and even tackling (the tackling is only for my boyfriend and my best friend emi) all the while yelling "TEEEEELLLL MEEEEH!!"

am have this problem, though most people actually explain things for am as understandable as possible, for am it's due to difficulties with language and processing.
am struggle with understanding most of the things said, but at least at home it isnt so much of a problem because staff have been trained to know how to communicate with am and what not to say/do-for example, they always ask if am understand what they've said because they know am do not let anyone know if dont understand.
the processing difficulty, means am wont understand words straight away,so might look like am dont know a word when just havent been given enough time to process it.

am find am get less understanding off the autistic community for language problems than anyone else.

Welcome to my world this happens ALOT FOR ME!! !! It annoys me when I ask and they say just forget it or something to that affect. :-) These are the joys of WP though it shows me I'm not the only one. :-)

Yes, I sometimes don't understand what people mean, especially if they are not being specific. A more common problem that I have is that I can't filter out background noises, so I actually don't hear the words well enough to understand them. For some weird reason, people mostly don't mind trying to explain themselves a bit better if I just didn't understand their point, but they get really impatient and rude if I don't hear the words well in the first place and ask them to repeat it or speak up. I've lost count of the annoyed "never mind" I've gotten for the latter.

Yes. Daily. Constantly. Infinitely frustrating.
That is what a combination of of CAPD and autistic tendencies does.
Sometimes I do feel like life cannot go on until I can understand, but then you get a chain of neverending "never mind"s so sometimes I just give up before that even starts.
