Ive avoided medication my whole life except for the occasional pain killer, so that may also be the cause, but i wonder if being hyper sensative to meds is an AS thing or not??

Ive recently had very rapid and very severe reactions to two different prescribed sleeping pills- without knowing any possible side effects beforehand, so ive not thought myself into side effects or anything.

Anyone else get this? Its ruining my life right now.

Terribly. I can take tylenol and if I have to I seem to do okay with benedryl if needed.

I have told docs that if I am going to start a mediation to not think 'low dose', but rather: what would you give a baby?

I am really sensitive. I get rashes, rare and adverse reactions, weird stuff. And really, where I have stuck it through, I don't seem as likely to benefit past side effects.

I work very hard to stay healthy in the hope that I can avoid meds. All you can do is try.

No I am more of the opposite, which gets to be annoying and expensive.

Oh, ok- thanks : )

I hadnt even condidered physical effects (im exhausted so incapable of decent cognition, ha ha).
That sounds horrible though!! do you have sensory sensitivities?? I do massivly- is it linked?? Or is there an established- either medically or by aspie word of mouth- link between autism snd different bodily sensativities to meds??

The First pills i was given- amit something- anti depression meds at high dose, bt sleeping pills at 10mg- was said to have 'no' hangover. I had the most hideous hangovers each time, took several days for it to wear off, and became suicidally depressed (oh irony).
After 3 temezepam in 5 days i feel extremly depressed again- and, yes, it can exacerbate depression in some people.

Wtf?? 3 temazzies in5 days should NOT have this severe and fast reaction. Im so bored with everything being maximum drama. I cant even sleep normally cos of stupid autism, now sleeping pills make me depressed in like 5 seconds cos of my stupid hyper sensative autistic body.
I just want to sleep and autism stops even that escape. I hate it.

Actually, I'm the opposite - I have a very strong tolerance for medication. I'm on enough psychiatric drugs to tranquilize a horse and yet I barely have any side effects at all.

No, it's the opposite way around. Oftentimes I need more of a drug to feel an effect than the average person.

@idahorose~ and syphonfilter~ *tips hat*

ha ha- thats amazing. Actually, im like that w some sedatives, bt i assumed it was a psychological thing- that im just fighting agsinat it so hard.

Maybe there is something in our body chemistry which is different to ZnTs then- that we are either frail fairies or strapping giants??

I know a lot of people talk about autistics being easily overwhealmed w toxins from drugs, food etc... Guess it makes sense for meds to work oddly if thats so.

I absolutely refuse to take any medication except for the occasional Motrin or sleeping pill.

Psychiatric drugs have tended to do very little for me. I also have a high caffeine tolerance (probably through regular use of it, though) but my alcohol tolerance is pretty much normal. Ditto for marijuana.

Medication usually has a strong effect on me. I can take one dose of an anti-depressant and practically feel it working straight away despite people saying oh that's just a placebo effect. I know it isn't. Likewise headaches go very quickly once I take two paracetamol.

I see myself as a highly sensitive person generally - I am emotionally very sensitive and sensitive to chemicals/drugs too which is logical to me - it just means my whole system is very sensitive as emotions are just brain chemical responses effectively.

I took a diazepam/Valium tablet on Saturday night and a friend did too. It had a very quick effect on me and practically no effect on my friend. It makes me wonder whether lack of sensitivity to drugs goes with emotional insensitivity as well. I would hypothesise that it does. I think a certain level of emotional insensitivity is vital for survival with the world being such a harsh place. I have to emulate this emotional insensitivity with anti-depressants.

I am sensitive, not hyper sensitive, like nessa above. Psychiatric drugs are awesome. They have improved my life greatly.

I under or over react, depending on the drug, or it might have unexpected results. For example, I was given a sleeping pill, the night before an operation, and it had the effect of keeping me awake the whole night. Sedation, for a hospital procedure, had no effect whatsoever. I was also given an inhaler, because I tend to get post-viral asthma. But, I try to avoid using it, because one dose makes me feel jittery, as if I've had loads of caffeine. Thankfully, I seldom take any medication.

Sedatives keep me awake, too. Valium speeds me up. I believe it is listed as a potential reaction, but it is not common from my understanding.

My mom says I had an allergic reaction to sulfa drugs when I was tiny (I don't even remember it) and I had a bad reaction to some medicines I took for bronchitis a couple of years ago....it was either to hydrocodone, clarythromycin, or maybe even the prednisone...I can't believe that I could have been reacting to something that's supposed to STOP allergic reactions!

Re: prednisone, I started wheezing with prednisone - I was taking it for a monster painful rash. I was told it is used to treat wheezing, not cause it - but, you can have allergic reactions. Sigh.

I'm the opposite. I find a lot of meds don't help me, so that coupled with the fact that I hate medication and I'm terrible for remembering to take it, makes for me not to want to take them at all. Why bother?
