Like sometimes I think I get sarcasm and sayings... I'll always think them literally and it's like something clicks once I do because they seem crazy and I get it, but then with things like joking requests or milder sarcasm I tend to interpret it literally and sometimes do what they ask only to find out later they were just joking. And I get it or don't get it regardless of their tone of voice or face... like it doesn't help me because I'd have to be constantly listening for it / watching their expressions like when I watch comedies, but in real life that's exhausting. Also like their laughing at me just looks like random smiles...

Oh and also I find that often I'll remember a weird saying but not understand why it means what it means... Like "chip of the old block" I know what it means but I don't understand it. Or often confuse it with other sayings...

And I remember being little and not understanding for the longest time what the actual definitions of sarcasm/irony/metaphors were in English class. I had the hardest time remembering their definitions until later in high school.

I wondered if maybe there were any tests for how well one understands sarcasm... but I can only find "How sarcastic are you?" tests.

So does anyone experience something similar?

Only sometimes do I "miss" what sarcasm or irony means (there is a slight difference, I think...but I could be wrong). I was born and raised in downstate New York, so sarcasm is kind of second nature. Still? It sometimes eludes me. I will look around and see if there is (are) another test (or tests) for this.

Meanwhile, you're doing GREAT! Sarcasm and Irony are very subtle forms of humor. Missing "sometimes" is NOT something to be upset about! You are to be congratulated! :)

Can't vouch for how GOOD this is and I haven't taken it, yet... I'll let you know how well or badly I do.

Such a test I think would be hard to compile, as how can something like sarcasm be acted out as if it were real life scenario's ?

At my first job I made tar brushes, I was on piecework (money I was paid depended on my production output) ,
On a particular occasion, my supervisor came to speak to me to ask if I could possibly increase my output as win a potential supply & demand customer order,

I explained I would try to cut corners, speed up my work when & wherever possible, although told him I was'nt keen on sacrificing the quality of my output as I'm very proud about the high quality of the items I make,

So my supervisor then says; "okay you loose nothing by trying to achieve more & its better than a kick in the balls" ..., 8O I looked at him nervously & seriously thought he was threatening me with phyisical violence if my output was'nt increased !

Of course he was'nt threatening me, as he's a great chap & I soon relized it was just a figure of speach , admitidly I did nervously ask for his re-assurance about his choice of phrase though ! !

Note that I'm not diagnosed (I'm going to ask my psychologist about it soon). I'm pretty sure I have AS though. I exhibit about 90% of the symptoms to varying degrees from mild (sarcasm/face/emotion reading) to extreme (Socially awkward, stimming - physical & visual, sensory issues, special interests).

Funny thing just happened... I copied and pasted your text to quote and the Smiley came out as smile and I thought you were telling me to smile... and I was like... I'm in an autism forum right? I'm pretty sure many of us hate to be told to smile. And then I realized what had happened.

The test wasn't very good because it didn't have a No Irony Option. Maybe copying it and adding that? It felt like when I used to take English tests and would use more testing skills than knowledge to get things right. It asks whether something is situation/verbal/dramatic irony. Not sure what dramatic irony means... As for situational or verbal, I quickly noticed if the question had quotes or if things were spoken that the answer was verbal irony. Then the test crashed on me and I didn't want to start over.

The best way would probably be short video clips with a timed yes/no answer. Because since we know it's a sarcasm test with enough time you'd get many of them.

Or just "this and this happens" is it irony? sarcasm? none? and have the questions be timed if possible, or ask the person to bubble in within the first few seconds.

A pretty good test, imo. It's informative and contains a good bit of subtlety. I missed one out of 25 questions, getting a score of 96 out of 100. I'd paste the link, but it would give all my answers away!

The are additional links and quizzes to be investigated; some are related, others remain a mystery (at least for the time being).

I hope whoever endeavors to take the test has fun and/or gains a better understanding of understanding of irony and the subset known as sarcasm. I had fun... but there's just no accounting for some people!

I got a score of 84/100.
On every question I got wrong, my second guess was the correct answer.

I got 96/100 of this one. Very little to do with sarcasm though. I'd be interested to see how I'd perform on one of those kinds of tests.

I got 100% on this (I was always very good at English), it seemed pretty easy as once you figured out exactly what each type of irony was, the questions repeated themselves in such a way as to be very easy to work out. 99.9% of the time I get sarcasm, figures of speech, etc, but every once in a while someone will say something sarcastic in such a way that I can't tell if they're being serious or not. Like the time my mom had her friend from work and their family over, and the friend's husband started teasing me about my juice box (don't judge me, I love apple juice!) He said something along the lines of, "Oh sure, I'll have one of those", apparently as a joke, but I missed it and offered to get him one... needless to say they all found that more amusing than what he'd said in the first place.

Yeah, that's why the test fails to test for sarcasm.

Anyways... I would have done the same thing with the apple juice! Those are the types of subtle things I miss because they're purely based on voice, expression and a bit of context.

I can't help reading every post in this thread as if it were sarcastic...

96 out of 100.

Only got one question wrong - I'd picked the right answer, then second-guessed myself and changed to the wrong one.

There should be some OKCupic test...but it is not uh.......exactly rigorous.

Also, see the [s][/s] [sarcasm][/sarcasm] tags.
