I wonder if in future the cure for autism would change or help the person. I think some people with autism would better that others. Also I think AS is cause by inbalance of the left and right sides of the brain.

I happen to be duel-brained and ambidextrous on top of that. There is no brain imbalance. I can switch at will. You might be referring instead to the weaker connection between the hemispheres and cross wiring (language goes to left when supposed to go to right, etc). Or alternatively active or targeted areas of the brain. There are MANY theories about the cause of Autism.

Autism is not caused by any right/left brain BS. That much is apparent from brain scans.

This. It's much more complicated than just a simple hemisphere imbalance.

This is more of a treatment because it doesn't actually remove the autism: John Robison TMS Experiences

Curing autism would inevitably change a person, you couldn't make a person NT and have them as the same person.

Whether it would help or not is subjective.

Indeed. For the higher function / AS people, how do we know that the cure would mean that you're just curing the issues we have? (such as the sensory stuff)

Would curing autism mean that I would lose my special interests? That I would never be able to fall in love again with a new obsession (be it a new music or a new topic of interest)?

Would it mean that I would stop having synaesthesia, which helps me a lot with my writing?

Would it mean that I would feel miserable when I'm alone, instead of enjoying loneliness?

Would it mean that I would become shallow and I would care more about other people's opinions about me than about the moral principles upon which I base my actions? Would it mean that I would live according to social conventions, rather than according to ethics?

Would I lose my sense of self and turn into another person?

If yes, then, as much as I hate my sensory issues, my sense of inadequacy, my inability to spend too much time with other people and my meltdowns, I don't think I would want to be cured...

I don't need to be cured. I'm perfect just the way that I am and I also have friends and I've worked at three different jobs over the course of my lifetime. I'm not really perfect, I mean nobody is. The point that I'm trying to make is that there are people on the spectrum who do well without being cured. My AS has formed nearly 40 years of likes, dislikes, and personality traits. If I was cured, I'd be a different person and I really don't want that for myself. It seems that you're trying to convert those of us who don't wish for a cure to think more like you. I'm glad I'm an Aspie. If I wasn't an Aspie, I'd probably be as ignorant as my Grade School bullies about ASDs. My mum once compared me to my role model many years before I had him as a role model. I take it as a compliment now. I'd rather come close to someone on the spectrum than come close to Jenny McCarthy. My role model is on the spectrum and you can see his name all over my profile due to my recent appearance. I don't want anybody attacking me on account of what I've just said about Mick Avory.

Wonderful post CockneyRebel. You and I think alike on our views of autism.

I am satisfied with the way that I am too. I know that I have issues and challenges resulting from my autism. But as I have said many times before, everyone has issues and challenges---autistic or not. I wouldn't want a cure because it would change who I am. I don't want to be changed. I greatly enjoy the gifts and interests that autism has provided me to have. Therefore, I am happily content with having autism.

From my oppinion, sure the person would be changed. If it helps depends on the person itselfs. If you have the desire to change, then it will help you, if you dont, it wont help you.

No one knows if or how a person would be fundamentally changed.

I think that if you cured a person, they would not be the same person anymore. If I became an nt, I would probably be a very different person. I would not care for my books, puzzles, or kitties. I would not show the same affection for my pets. I would spend my time out with friends like my brother, not coming home until who knows at what hours in the morning. I would be fighting with my parents over what time I got home. I would not care for anything at home. How depressing. If being like my brother is what it means to not have AS, then I prefer to stay the way I am. I might even change the entire decoration in my room! I'd probably go back to blank, white walls, instead of purple and green, and maybe even change the furniture for furniture with sharp angles.

If you can do that without taking away the other stuff, maybe. But a lot of it is connected.

My life would be a lot easier if I had better executive function. But I would also be a lot less creative.
