heres something which i think's stupid, autistics being given braces, heres why:

1. pain and feeling of having them put in
2. oversensivity of them being in
3. having to brush your teeth better
4. having to have teeth removed which will hurt
5. uncomfort of having them tightened
6. having your dentist having goes at you about your teeth even though your trying
7. having to go to the dentist more
8. having someone else looking in your mouth which i would be more than unfomfortable with (i'm talking about an orthadontist)

And all for staight teeth, i think its stupid

I used to have braces too. You're absolutely right. They're uncomfortable, painful and just suck all around. But please believe me when I say that years from now when your teeth are straight, it will be worth it.

I hated braces! That's why I tore them off myself.

I say it is kind of stupid.

I had it done about 27 years ago by an OLD dentist! I eventually went to a newer dentist, and he laughed! They had long ago replaced the tightening wires with rubber disks!

The old dentist accused me of not wearing the headgear EVEN when I obviouly wore it all the time. He kept trying to scare me to continue, and I said ******FORGET IT******! I STILL had two teeth in a bad position. He NEVER tried to fix them. I say HAD, because one succumbed to his negligence about 3 years ago. I had to shift my bite on every bite to compensate. That is obviously IMPOSSIBLE because you can slip, or bit in your sleep. One tooth can NOT handle full jaw pressure, so it cracked. NOW I have my first cap. My bite is FINALLY normal, but that other tooth means I can only apply 1/3 to 1/2 of the force. I don't know WHAT will happen THEN!

I STILL have a yellow line where my braces were. It is like they ate off the enamel!

Anyway, TODAY, they have FAR better technology! Hopefully your experience will be better.

I've had braces for a year and 4 months now, and yes it was uncomfortable originally, very painful after tightening and annoying to have to go back to the orthodontist every 6 weeks or so, but it is going to be worth it when I finally have straight teeth. I haven't brushed my teeth any more than I used to and my orthodontist hasn't complained. As with anything else, it depends entirely on the person.

I've never had braces. And I don't really understand why it's stupid... but maybe it is... just not to me... because.... I've never had braces.

I got braces on my own when I was fully grown, because I was always self conscious about my crooked teeth and overbite. I felt it was well worth it, as I had a much better appearance, and found it easier to keep my teeth clean. It depends if it is important to you, I guess.

With all due respect, you probably haven't seen the worst parts! When *I* had it done, HERE is how it worked!

1. REMOVE some teeth, because #2 isn't possible otherwise!
2. Change spacing of teeth to allow for braces by inserting wires, and slowly spreading teeth.
3. Glue braces onto teeth,
4. insert compression band, and tie down with wire.
5. have child wear headgear to further compress band.

LATER, the band has to be removed, and braces have to be cracked off teeth.

I guess i'm weird cause i actually quite liked it when my teeth got pulled, admittedly it was only two, but they had DOUBLE roots, which took a while to get out, it was rather amusing though as my dentist was really excited as they are uncommon, he was so pleased, anyway.

The main annoyance with braces is the discomfort, especially when they get tightened and you have to eat soup all day, but that can be easily remedied with painkillers. Apart from that, i actually quite liked mine, everytime i ate i had to brush my teeth which i didn't mind as i'm really paranoid about dental hygiene (if you knew my parents you'd understand) and i got days off school to go to the orthodontist, which was superb.
