Cross-race effect

Is asperger's an extreme form of racism? The cross-race effect describes the inability of some people to process faces and facial expression of people who are of a race or ethnic group other than their own. So do people with autism spectrum see themselves as their own ethnicity, confused by the "foreigners" around them? Could this be related to ethnic mixing, where some people may not identify with the people around them as members of the same ethnic group?

Racism and Aspergers are large collections of traits. Just because a couple of them overlap does not make them equivalent.

Well, the name of this very website and the fact that most of us can relate to it kind of supports your theory.

On the main page of Wrong Planet one can't help but notice that all of the faces are of nerdy white guys and their counterpart females. Maybe, in the back of visitors' minds, the typical spectrumite is a white nerd. I don't know what the percentage of minority spectrumites are but it's probably not very large. Hopefully this dichotomy, in no way, lends itself to undue prejudice.

That the two may have some very slight similarity on the surface does not indicate that there is any connection between them at all. It's about as silly as saying that your car is some kind of elephant because both elephants and cars make loud blaring noises on occasion.

What's this?

Is someone trying to build a case for Aspies being racists?

What next? Did we all get this way from breathing air?

Its almost ironic to talk about autism and race.

As racist project the absurd idea that people with different skin pigmentation somehow different neurologies.

We actually do have different neurologies which is very ironic, as aspergers has no racial boundaries.

From being a loner and a social outcast I have developed a more egocentric concept of culture. One of the benefits of this is that since I have never completely understood or blended in with the local culture , it makes it easier for me to see other cultures from a culturally relativistic perspective. This is quite the opposite of racism. I'm kind of annoyed with the human race as whole because of the ignorance and antipathy that so many people have, but I don't see any particular group of people as being superior to another.

I'm a white man married to a non-white woman.

Or, to put it from a different perspective, she is a ganda Filippina married to a pogi Kano.

where is the racism in that?

some aspies have face-blindness, and others dont. Like sometimes you get a cough with a cold, and sometimes not.

Face blindness is no more synonomous with aspergers than coughing is with the flu. So right there you theory is sunk. And a faceblind person may be faceblind to their own face in a photograph of themselves in a crowd ( making them 'racist' against themselves). So faceblindedness does not make you into 'your own ethnic group".

Second if your bailout and claim that "okay aspergers isnt the issue - its faceblindness. Is face blindness a form of extreme racism" you are still not making any sense.

Though people do seem to have less ability to distinquish faces among people of other races that not the same thing as "racism". Racism is disliking the folks of the other color- whether you can recognize them or not.

We have more trouble recognizing faces of other ethnic groups than the average person so we're racist? No, this logic is flawed. We have trouble recognizing faces because of a neurological condition. Everyone has more trouble recognizing faces of people from other ethnic groups than faces of people from their own. Therefore we have more trouble recognizing faces from other ethnic groups than the average person. We have more trouble recognizing any face than the average person-the degree of trouble recognizing a face of a person from another ethnic group might increase proportionally but that doesn't mean we discriminate more based on race.

That might be the most convoluted logic I have ever read.

err are you talking about mine or the OP's?

okay, assuming you're talking about my logic I'm just saying this; imagine people in general tend to be 8/10 at recognizing people's faces of their own ethnic group but are 7/10 at recognizing faces of ppl from another ethnic group. ASD'ers are 6/10 at recognizing people's faces from their own ethnic group, but probably 5/10 at recognizing people from other ethnic groups.

To suggest that because we're even worse than the general pop at recognizing faces is flawed logic -we're worse than the general pop at recognizing faces in general.....

NT's are just as much worse at recognizing people of other races than those of their own race as we are.
