I keep reading things about the elementary school shooting and things keep popping up about maybe the shooter was AS, and friends posting things on facebook about so and so's kid who has "mental issues" and is violant and XYZ diagnoses and AS have been thrown around but how the kid doesn't have a specific diagnosis as of yet. I am always close to going off on these posts because NONE of those I know who are AS are the least bit violent. I don't see that as an AS trait in any way shape or form. My son and boyfriend are the kindist most non violent people I know and would never hurt anyone like that no matter how upset they were about something. I do know others on the spectrum and their personalities are all very similiar. I know that pople who are AS have as many differences in personality as NT do... so I don't mean to generalize... but I just don't see such violent behavior being linked in any way to AS. Now maybe in severe Autism cases such as those who are non verbal or non functioning... but then personally I feel that AS is not properlly catagorized. To me it feels like something totally different than Autism. How can AS and Autism be lumped together. There is nothing "lacking" in someone with AS they just do the same things differently is all. Sorry for the rant there.... In the opinions of those who post here... is this "connection" with the shooter and AS as stupid as I think it is or am I missing something? Is that sort of behavior prevelant in some groups of people who are AS? I just don't see it, but before I start setting people straight I want to make sure I am not missing the mark

The only thing I have ever see associated with AS is the Rumble/Rage/Recovery cycle.
By that I mean something will set us off, could be someone disrupting our routine, someone moving something of ours, etc.
We then have a Rage event, we generally yell and make a big fuss and say some pretty stupid things.
We then recover and this frustrates NT's (like my wife) we will just return to normal and look at everyone we just blasted and say "What?" like nothing happened and often won't remember the things we said a few days later when everyone else is still mad at us.

But it is never violent and usually short lived.

And yes it makes me upset that the media latches on to this and makes a big deal of it. It is like why even mention it when people with AS are not prone to this kind of behavior.

Violence, from military organizations to street gangs, seems to have an inherent social component. I don't see people with Asperger's Syndrome understanding and participating in violence as a social activity. If anyone who commits violence has any autistic traits, there is a whole lot more to what's going on inside of them than just autism. Even if someone has a special interest in the military, that does not mean they will be violent. Some of the most pacific and anti-war people are ones who have been in, or studied, warfare and violence.

I'm locking this thread for one reason only. There are already a plethora of threads about the same topic. If you could find one of them and participate there, it would be greatly appreciated.

Here's one right here:

Thank you.
