Hey.

I stumbled across this forum and have been reading many threads about symptoms of autism and aspergers and am intrigued (in a good way) about how some of you guys view things.

I have not been diagnosed with either but was tested at a young age but dismissed due to my large levels of empathy. I think of myself as neurotypical, however after reading comments on the forum I have noticed there are some things that I feel/think in the same way. My list is as follows:

  • I enjoy programming and understanding computers partly because of the fact they follow rules. Humans cannot be forced to follow rules and are always unpredictable and uncontrollable.
  • I think spatially - my mind is an empty 3-dimensional canvas that can be filled with reasonably complex models.
  • When I imagine complex scenes, such as movies or video games, I require a lot of subconscious physical movements to stay concentrated and avoid distraction. I always pace up and down and move my hands vigorously - and imagine things much more "shallow" in the company of others.
  • I become obsessed with fictional characters and imagine them in my own situations, often merging different interests.
  • If things don't follow rules, I get annoyed. Delayed transport, for instance, doesn't bother me like some people, but the fact things don't do what they're supposed to is.. well, it's hard to explain.
  • I am a control freak. Often I am reluctant to work with other people because I want to pursue the thing that is in my head and avoid the incompetence of others :P
  • I dislike feeling certain emotions such as jealousy, because I am not in control of how I feel. People should be able to think what they want, it's their brain, right?

Please comment if you have any of these traits and your own opinions, I am really interested to hear what you think :)

Welcome,
Have you taken any of the online aspie tests? Thats where I began. The results :
Aspie score:175 of 200
NT score:32 of 200
You are very likely an Aspie.
A good first step.

Hello, thanks for the advice.
I took an AQ Test on the internet, and got a 29.
It seems I'm quite high into the borderline zone. Can anyone comment who has similar behavioral patterns to me?

EDIT: Took the test you referred to and got:
Quote:
Your Aspie score: 90 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 105 of 200
You seem to have both Aspie and neurotypical traits

So I guess I am more NT than Aspie

i got 34 in the AQ test.

You sound like an aspie - i like my computers for same reason. They make sense and do what I want. lol

I relate to a lot of what you said.

Welcome

Only you can decide whether or not you have autism. Either way, you are welcome here.

From the tests and what you've all said, I think it's fair to assume I'm kind of in the middle
An AQ of 29 isn't particularly high, but it's not exactly 100% neurotypical, is it?
It's also great to know there are people out there who are similar to me :)
