No.
Social anxiety is when you're anxious about socialising.
Asperger's means that you're bad at socialising, among other things.
You can have both.

No. I probably have the least social anxiety of all the people in my family except my father, but I'm still a social idiot.

True Knives. I used to have horrible social anxiety but it's not so bad these days. I'm just an impulsive socially awkward autistic. I have generalised anxiety though, big time.

Most of the time I get frustrated with people for saying things I didn't expect, challenging me and stuff. Social anxiety is a fear of what people think of you and a fear to not say something stupid because of what they will think about it. These days I don't much care about that because I think who I am now is better than what most people are. There's no envy, no wanting to be like them.

Also, Asperger's is on the autistic spectrum and is a neurological disorder. It's mostly genetic and you're born AS. Social anxiety may be a bit hereditary but most of the time it has an environmental cause, in our case the symptoms of autism could help us develop it, and it is a mental illness.

Because I'm impulsive and say stupid things, I'm trying to stop myself from developing social anxiety again by just thinking it's better than saying nothing, and telling myself I'm really not that stupid. I have a poor memory too so that makes it worse, but during one of these moments someone actually called me smart. Maybe I don't sound as dumb as I appear to myself.

No But you can have both. I suspect I have social anxiety but it's not like the others who have it. For a while I just thought it was shyness. Then I realized it may be social anxiety because of what it does when I push myself.

Autistics often have Social Anxiety Disorder, but its only one thing amongst many. Autism/Asperger's is a pervasive Developmental Disorder, which means it effects many areas of a person's life. Not just social problems.
Asperger's for example includes sensory issues, insistence on routines, great anxiety over changes, problems relating to others including problems picking up on Non-verbal cues, This is not a complete list, by any means!

Sincerely,
Matthew

Nah, look at the diagnostic criteria; social anxiety only covers a very small portion of the diagnosis and neglects the sensory issues and narrow interests. I have pretty severe social anxiety and was diagnosed with general anxiety on top of Asperger's because the anxiety clearly exceeded levels caused simply by the autism disorder. Anyway, despite this, I'm incredibly adept at masking my anxiety when thrown into a situation where I have to be social, it's just that I do my absolute best to avoid these situations and thus, rarely socialize.

I was told I have social anxiety disorder 10 years ago, but I do not really have it. Social situations do not make me anxious. They make me a lot of other things, but not anxious.

No, they're totally different.
Social anxiety is:
-Being too anxious to socialize, even if you got all the social skills you need;
Asperger's syndrome is:
-Lacking social skills;
-Lacking non-verbal communication;
-Having many other symptoms that Social anxiety doesn't have.

AS comes with social anxiety most of the times, but they're two very different things.

DSM-IV-TR says:

Quote:
Although some individuals with Asperger’s Disorder may experience heightened and debilitating anxiety in social settings as in Social Phobia or other Anxiety Disorders, the latter conditions are not characterized by pervasive impairments in social development or by circumscribed interests typical of Asperger’s Disorder.

Wow, if Asperger's were just social anxiety disorder, it wouldn't just be curable--it would be easily curable. Social anxiety disorder responds to gradual safe exposure to social situations you're afraid of. Of course, if you also have AS, it's harder to deal with because you will periodically experience unpleasant social experiences, setting you back, so it's slower, but it still works. They're two completely different things despite their common comorbidity.

social anxiety and asperger syndrome are two different things, but then again, aspies tend to suffer from social anxiety so much more often than neuro typical. i used to suffer from such social anxiety that i was too afraid to walk into mcdonald to order a sandwich!
people with social anxiety only dont like walking on their toes, have problem understanding facial expression, have one very sharp sense and one very dull, hyperactive, obssessed, rocking, stimming, dull voice/look in eyes, etc.

I feel like I'm someone with social anxiety and Aspie symptoms. I have all the symptoms of social anxiety/phobia, but when I look at the list of social Aspie traits I find I only have one or two of the traits that only affect me very mildly, so if I didn't have any social anxiety, I would be like an introverted NT (if you take away all my non-social Aspie traits like routine-orientated, big anxiety, anger/outbursts, sensory issues, et cetera).
