It was only a matter of time, I knew it from so long ago. My husband has been in major denial that she has anything "wrong", and for a long time he made me feel crazy like it was all in my mind, and said it was my bad parenting that made her have her behaviours. Even though he knows I have it, and it's genetic he won't accept it. I actually haven't told him yet, waiting for him to get back from work. You may think how awful of me to tell a load of online strangers before I tell my own husband, but he just doesn't understand anything and you guys will.

My eldest daughter is waiting her assessment too. I feel even more sure she will get a DX after today. I'm still letting the fact sink in, that three quarters of my family are autistic.

I had to talk about my daughter to the multi-disciplinary team for almost three hours. You can imagine how I feel now, exhausted isn't the word.

I know I didn't ask to have AS myself but I still feel so guilty that it's my fault now I've been told 'officially' she has it.

Just out of curiosity, since you seem to have a lot of money for tests and doctors and such, have you had your DNA tested for neanderthal ancestry? With such a strong genetic expression in your offspring, I'm genuinely curious and you seem like maybe the right person to ask. I suppose a forum post is in order, anyway.

You're joking! Lots of money - I wish! I'm in the UK and we have the NHS which is free (well, you pay into it when you are working, like a tax).

I am really interested in genealogy and at some point I will get a DNA test. But I know that the really in-depth one which locates autistic genes is really expensive (and would only be paid for by the NHS in extraordinary circumstances) so I wouldn't be able to get that one. Just one to say where my ethnic origin is from.

I can test you for neanderthal DNA free of charge. Answer the following questions, you have 30 minutes to complete this test.

1) Have you ever, or are you currently, or do you anticipate in the future, finger paint(ed/ing) on a cave wall?

I wish you and your daughter the best. It's not your fault and your daughter will grow and adapt as she gets older. She'll also develop a great personality as well. Another important thing to remember is that you have us no matter how immature your husband might act about the news.
