I have never understood the excitement about New Year. It's just another day, it's only called New Year because humans evolved enough intelligence to invent a calendar system, so it's not really New Year. The earth has been around for billions of years and it would be hard to pinpoint a new year because the sphere of the earth grew from smaller pieces in the cosmos being attracted to one another by gravity/forces to form the planet. I feel the same about all the man-made celebrated dates.

Good luck to everyone anyway.

 Trust someone here to post something as logical as this - as the very first reply, too!

Yes, it's a completely artificial reasons for celebration, I agree. We don't celebrate "new month" or "new financial year" or "new quarter" for some reason. But hey, if a made up reason is what it takes to make people happy for a night, I see no harm in it. :)

Does New Year make people happy? From what I've seen it makes the NT population very drunk and punishes therm with a hangover, and reminds the rest of us that we're different and not accepted by society.

Logical or not logical, I wish all of you a Happy New Year! Better than the current (last) one.

I kind of agree (I hate New Year coz I'm always on my own and everyone seems to make such a big deal out of going out) but I like the idea of a new start- i mess up so many things that it's nice to make a list of things to work on for the year. I know I could do that anyway, but usually I never get round to it.

The only reason I like New Year's Eve is because I'm a Kinks fan and if Pete Quaife was still alive he'd be celebrating his Birthday, today.

Speak for yourself on that one. I know plenty of people who celebrate all three.

I'm an aspie and I celebrate New Year's, albeit by myself. And with champagne, to boot! And that's good. In the past I've been known to go further.

Happy new year to you all!

14 minutes for me to midnight and me and my dog are happy indeed because it is raining, so it doesn't sound like WW III has started. Still some bangs, and undoubtely more at midnight, but it's tolerable this year.
