Asperger's syndrome and reading

I'm just curious...do you think that people with Asperger's Syndrome tend to read at a slower pace than NTs? I ask this because of my own experiences.

No, it depends on the person. Some people have reading problems and/or are slow, but some people read super duper fast and good comprehension.

I've found that I can only read maybe one book in a few months as compared to my friends, who can read several in the same period of time. It embarrasses me a bit.

folks with AS tend to have learning disabilities. mine are fine motor and visual-spatial, part of which makes me a slow reader.

Reading books takes me longer than average, but not because I am a slow reader. The reason I take so long is because I constantly re-read lines so I can fully understand what is being said. It can be a nightmare in books with a lot of description, such as a lot of Tolkien works.

I'm average, but I tend to get easily distracted if there is noise, or more frequently by my own thoughts wandering off.

Yes. I learned to read pretty late and then read slowly for years. I now read faster than average but only because I've trained myself to read quickly using a pen along the line.

I think the visual-spatial difficulties that many aspies have can affect reading if they are severe enough.

I often do this, too, especially with a book I like a lot.

In fact, this is a much more preferred style than skimming.

If I understand what I read (preferably my field of interest), I can read at a great speed. When I was younger, I actually experimented with speed reading by fast forwarding movies with subs. (Or reading end credits)
But, I too struggle with fiction texts and made up places, names etc. I don't know why. Perhaps my brain tells me this is not real stuff and of no importance to me?

I can be a fast reader if the subject totally interests me otherwise it takes me a long time to read because I often get distracted and have to read the same line/paragraph many times to fully understand, which is pretty frustrating.

i read books in hours, i sometimes have to re read words, too but i think universal.

I go to the opposite extreme.
Give me a 300 page sci-fi novel that I get into and I can read it in around 6 hours or less.
My reading speed still increases as the years go by ( albeit less than 1% a year ) which is really annoying as I need massive amounts of reading material around to keep me entertained ( thank goodness for the internet ).

It depends on my mood, and how into the book I am.

I can read most Harry Potter books in a day or two, and have twice now ditched other books in order to reread Harry Potter (all of them) again). But other books can take me weeks or even months.

i'm an extremely fast reader, i hav ebeen accused of only reading half the pages or simply flipping pages without reading before.
when the harry potter books were new, i read 2 of them per day, and i still know almost all of the story by rote...

I've been wondering about that, too.

I am a very slow reader. I seriously thought I might have some disability. But being able to complete a uni degree means I must be ok. Still I can't say I am good at reading. I can read and understand well whatever I read, but unless it is absolutely interesting, it's a real pain for me to read. That's why I tend not to read those posts here on WP that are too long. I simply skip them. It's not nice not to read what other people have to say, but long posts are just too overwhelming for me. I myself try not to write too much in my post for that reason.

I don't know if it has anything to do with AS, but it could be a secondary trait of AS. Attention to detail is a common trait in people with AS and I think that they could be carried away with details and be slow in reading. Or it seems many people with AS have OCD as well, and people with OCD also tend to be perfectionists, which slows down their reading.
