For years, I would never want to admit that I had asperger's. I would just say that it wasn't true. Can anyone relate to this?

Totally. After a psychologist dropped me from his caseload, and "diagnosed" me with "autistic tendencies", I went in denial for a long time, even though I identified as autistic for, I'm not sure, maybe a year or two before that.

I never overtly denied it, but I did at times try to conceal behavior that might indicate to others that I was autistic. I didn't believe I was autistic, but I was aware of many behaviors that appeared autistic to me.

Yes, I sure did. One of my high school band directors has a son with mild autism, and hearing all the stories of what he did scared me. I thought "There's no way I'm in the same club as this kid!" After a few years, and my symptoms taking a couple of steps backwards, I was finally able to move on and am slowly starting to accept it.

I can definitely relate to this...........part of it is because it's never been proven that I actually have Aspergers, and because when the topic does come up, it usually leads into "you should try to get on disability", or the other person thinking I'm more "special needs" than I actually am.

I don't relate really, except that I don't think any information like that is anyone's business unless the person it involves chooses to share it.

im kinda the opposite, i didnt think about aspergers because i was diagnosed with "adhd" "incipient schizophrenia" and "bipolar disorder" down the road i realized that the bipolar was usually a result of being forced into unwanted social contact, making me downright nervous and angry, a friend whos going through psychology and has known me most of my life mentioned that i fit far more strongly with aspergers than my previous diagnosis'.

turns out after talking to my doc, im a near-textbook case of aspergers and am now diagnosed. for me it helps because it gives a lot of answers as to the 'why' of why my life has been so messed up.

That he "dropped you from his caseload" sounds awful.

I've had periods of outright denial. Sometimes I feel like I'm functioning very well socially but other times I "get out of rythm" and suddenly I'm very clumsy and I realize that I have difficulties. I just don't feel Autistic when I'm "in sync" even though I know I am.

Overall, the diagnosis is a partial fit but it's the best fit. I fit better into the category of Autistic than I do anything else even though I don't fit into anything 100% cleanly.

When I was a toddler it was undeniable even though I only met the minimum criteria for Asperger's. I also met the minimum criteria for OCD, ADHD, and Tourette's.

My bloomer phase made my Autism more subtle. I adjusted so well some people have been surprised when I told them I had Autism. Recently I've been in so much distress I've been falling apart and I notice my Autism showing and I think people see it. Now there's no denying it.

I definitely have Autism even though I sometimes feel like I don't. I am confident I was misdiagnosed with ADHD though. I went off my meds which were supposedly controlling my ADHD and I was off them for over a week without noticing a resurgence of my symtpoms.

Most people who are intelligent can spot me a mile away. Once i open my mouth or stare off into space.
This has happened since i was born.
There is no way to hide this for me. I am on the ball, so some might not pick up on that if they first meet me. It depends on a lot of factors and whats going on around me.
I don't understand how people can "hide their autistic self" from others...

People in Elementary school and up made fun of me, as they knew something was "different" and i was " weird" yet even if they couldn't explain why i was.

I was like 10? I auctually knew someone with classic low functioning autism quite well, so when I was told I has AS and what it really was I was in complete denial. I knew I was different but just couldn't see how I was anything like her and this if true was really something that was going to be in the way of my quest to be accpeted like everyone else if anyone found out.

Yes. Once mom told me finally I wasn't true Asperger's and I didn't really have enough for the label but was diagnosed with it anyway because it was the closest match the psychiatrist could come to for a diagnoses. I felt fake and then started to say I didn't have it and they lied to me. Then mom told me I do meet the criteria so I called her out on her contradiction telling her I thought I didn't have enough and she told me "You slip on and off the criteria." So apparently I do have enough but not 24/7 but enough to be on the autism spectrum. After I started saying I didn't have it, my parents would insist I do have it. Then I have thought I have grown out of it and would say I don't have it anymore. I still don't want to place myself in the autism catagory and define myself as such. I was under "other health impaired" on the IEP. I still prefer to keep my autism as a secret but I don't always mask my behavior because I will sometimes let myself pace or rock back and forth with people around and just talk not caring if I show any social deficits because I'm not being shy. But I still normalize my behavior saying everyone does this and that. That happens to everyone. I refuse to see my symptoms as impairments and my husband thinks I'm in denial and not accepting myself. I do often feel I don't have it if everything is going fine.

But since there is PDD-NOS and so many people on the spectrum seem to be diagnosed with AS and not actually have it, I don't think it matters what autism label I have. Plus they are making it all autism anyway and calling it ASD and getting rid of all the autism labels.

I was told I had Apgerger's when I was 6 and once I found out every day every since I have just been more happy then I was before that day. I just always felt difference - I knew I was different, I just didn't know why...

I can't relate to this at all. I only got diagnosed this year and my reaction was more one of "OMG I finally know wtf is up with me - woot!". Now I am more than happy to let people know; if people don't want to talk to me as a result of that then that is a win for me - I almost certainly did not want to talk to them anyway. If somebody thinks I am stupid or something as a result of knowing then again: that is a win for me, I have them at an advantage.
