Miserable failure' links to Bush

George W Bush has been Google bombed.

Web users entering the words "miserable failure" into the popular search engine are directed to the biography of the president on the White House website.

The trick is possible because Google searches more than just the contents of web pages - it also counts how often a site is linked to, and with what words.

Thus, members of an online community can affect the results of Google searches - called "Google bombing" - by linking their sites to a chosen one.

Weblogger Adam Mathes is credited with inventing the practice in 2001, when he used it to link the phrase "talentless hack" to a friend's website.

The search engine can be manipulated by a fairly small group of users, one report suggested.

Newsday newspaper says as few as 32 web pages with the words "miserable failure" link to the Bush biography.

The Bush administration has been on the receiving end of pointed Google bombs before.

In the run-up to the Iraq war, internet users manipulated Google so the phrase "weapons of mass destruction" led to a joke page saying "These Weapons of Mass Destruction cannot be displayed."

The site suggests "clicking the regime change button", or "If you are George Bush and typed the country's name in the address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly (IRAQ)".

-----

I'm not trying to start a flame war here; my posting this is not a political comment. I just think this is funny.

((this has probably already been posted before but I can't find it on a cursory glance- it's old news but I only just found out about it myself))

((also have no idea what forum this "belongs" in so am just putting it here. It's not serious enough for the politics forum IMO as this is not intended to generate discussion))

I suggest that everyone here links to wrongplanet.net with the text "aspergers" so we will be first when anyone searches for "aspergers"!

Who will be the first volunteer?

I thought we were the first... *naive*

Or is that "aspergers + forum"?

EDIT: Just looked us up. We're 9th 8O I though we were higher up on the list than that. I know I've done my bit with typing aspergers syndrome + forum and WP's link on my blog. Hope that helps. :D

Yeah I do find that funny. If you search for "miserble failure near Washington D.C." you get all of the Democratic party offices, and there is one for Michael Moore. Another good one is "French military victories".

hmmmmm......

what is the point in this again

oh yes, to be top of Google, or phrases entered into the google engine to find your site, WP isn't linked to in that many places, it is however quite high up the list anyway when you enter "asperger's syndrome" (without the quotes)

I think google's bot's are not very good made, as they search they bring up tone's of *cough*
that's got nothing to do with the subject...

Also they started shuting the virus sites down which should check before it even adds anyway..

Isn't google been sold or it been sold...

I need to use an advanced search bot prog that finish's the job the google bot's should of done...

wrongplanet listing rank , they it's first :P

Try "asperger neanderthal" or "autism neanderthal" ;-)

The trick is to find some "unique" search words that are
relevant and that people are expected to enter quite
often.

If you type "wrong planet", you will end up here, at least.

Also, for me at least, "asperger forum" will list WP as
the 5th result.

OTOH, searching for only Asperger, I cannot find WP
in the first few pages.
