someone i know told me she's a college student, and the aspies in college are the smartest. she also said they talk to themselves and sing in the middle of the lecture.
i found that strange, because i never talk to myself in public and never sang in classes in school. is that realy common? anyone does that, as a grownup, i mean, even as a teen?
i used to flap my fingers in public, but was told not to do it by my parents, so now i close all the windows and make sure no one sees me when i pace back and forth and flap my fingers. i've always been very aware of not doing anything out of the ordinary in public and drawing attention to myself, maybe because my parents have always told me that as a child.

When I get nervous I repeat words outloud, or when I get a awkward thought in my head I will repeat the last word I said to try to distract myself from the thought. I often do this in public and i'm not sure if this is my autism or ocd. It is definitely anxiety related. Don't know if its a stim or compulsion.

I also finger flap when nervous, wring my hands profusely, rub and scratch my head

No, I do not talk to myself in public, only in private and then usually when I'm thinking/complaining about something or doing something. I don't know why though, it's more like making aloud annotations by mentioning my activity so I do not get confused or anything than having a conversation with myself.

EDIT: Now that I think about it... I sometimes whisper something to myself when I know nobody is listening or spectating me in public.

Yes, I talk, sing, and hum to myself in public. I have done it in class, probably because I was super duper bored. I have hummed to myself during the listening phase of one-on-one conversations with others.

i do this; i find it easier to make sense of things when i explain it to myself.
also, i do indeed repeat words i just said when i have low energy (echololia, i think it is called).

however, i have learned myself to to this silently; you might see my lips move like a bad ventriloquist, but i wont produce sound, not anymore

I whispered to myself in public as a teen. I've always done this in private. I need to vocalise my runaway thoughts that repeat over and over in my head. Vocalise fantasies etc.

Yes, sometimes it's the only way to have an intellegent conversation.

I am humming to myself during conversations or at random moments. Sometimes I am whispering to myself during work (my coworkers get use to it) - it helps me solving problems. In past I had a cat and I sometimes imitate "meows" (this is wierd :D) .

Conversations in my head sometimes get vocalised. More often I have that under control, my biggest problem tends to be acting out hand jesters that go along with the conversation. I sing when I don't think people are around (trying to get better at it so any excuse to practise), but often it turns out I thought wrongly!

I talk to myself when I'm alone but I do it in case someone's listening (not that I think that's the case) that way I can explain what I'm doing if it doesn't make obvious sense from a third person point of view. I like to do things "just in case" and narrating my actions and explaining what I'm doing out loud is one of those "just in case" things. There's no harm if I really am alone. That means I'm just talking to myself.

I never talk to myself in public though.

I do make hand gestures in public when I'm rehearsing a conversation I might have in the future. It's the same as it is with NotaHero. I get so involved in imagined conversations that I act them out with both gestures and facial expressions while forgetting that I'm still in the presence of other people.

I sometimes say a word or two loudly when I'm alone, but talking in public would be kinda weird to me.

I talk to myself in private and sometimes the habit spills over in public, especially when I'm really engrossed in my thoughts and forget where I am.

I talk and sing and hum to myself in public as well.
It just happens, and it happens a lot and it occured that when I was talking to myself and did not realize that I was talking to myself a person turned around to me and asked me: "What did you say?" as I would have said something to the person, which in fact I did not.
I do not know what I am really saying, but sometimes in my mind I talk to a person I know like "practising conversation" and when I think verbally, I can only do it directed to another person as I have no good sense of self, and then it happens that I talk out loud.

I often talk to myself in private, and gesture publicly. Weird, but I don't have full control over it.
