Is this another trait that is just limited to people like ourselves who are on the spectrum, or am I barking up the wrong tree on this one? And no I'm not talking about that metaphorical Kansas song from 1977 that has no drum or percusion lines in it, but the real thing.

Anyways, if I'm inside a room, and the lighting is just right, I can often see dust floating around in the air. I can remember this as a little kid too. I would often point out to mom that there was dust floating around in the room and that I could see it. Mom always replied that she could never see any dust floating around.

Well I noticed this again last night, and I mentioned it to my NT room mate. He was unable to see the dust floating around in the air.

Yes, you can see small airbourne stuff such as dust if the light is just right.

Smell of sugar may elude me, but this "dust soup" floating in the air I have seen frequently. Fortunately I don't see it at all times, as it is most disgusting, especially when one realizes that this is what we breathe. I will act as if I did not read the sugar discussion and I will express utter disbelief that anyone could be unaware of this phenomenon.

I'd rather not think about it thanks - I need a drink

I remember as a kid on sunny days I would spend hours watching dust drifting in the air currents in the house, trying to disturb the patterns by blowing. Fascinating...

Well, it depends on where your standing when this "dust in the wind" phenomenon occurs. I always thought that other people were able to see it, but I never asked anyone. I don't find it disgusting, rather, I think it's incredibly beautiful.

What my point is, though, is that viewed from another angle, you don't see the dust, so it may just be that your mother was not viewing the dust at the same angle you were, and the light was not reflecting off of it in her direction, like it was in yours. Now you've got me curious about this, though...

Ahhhh Yes!! ! It's a good thing we don't see it at all times....all that dust and dead skin cells and bits of hair and tiny microscopic organisms and don't forget the live (and dead) germs. Thank goodness for all of those dust mites chomping away 24/7 or we would literally be up to our necks in the "stuff" although those dust mites are pretty creepy looking too, if you ask me.

Don't even get me listing all the "stuff" there is in the fluids we drink (hehehe)

Yeah I can see the dust particles in the air most times under different types of lighting.

I can see the dust particules in the air when there is a lighting source (like the sun) nearby.

Seeing dust like that is because of dark-field effect:

Perhaps you have had the experience of sitting on a sunny day in a dark room with the shades drawn or pulled down. A beam of sunshine came into the room through a very small hole in the drape or windowshade. As you watched from the side you could see dust and small threads moving through the air. This is another instance of "dark-field" observation.

I have poor vision but yes, I notice dust in the air. I stare at it when I am thinking. People think I'm weird about this. It also distracts me sometimes.

! Other people cannot see this?! Are you serious? I will have to start polling all the Nt's I come across (heh, heh...)

I just took it for granted as an ordinary occurrence.

Another thing I like it it sit at night by an open window with a light nearby, when the weather is cold, and blow...it is fun to watch my breath swirling in the air. I could do this for an hour at least, as a teen...

How about floaters, in your eye? Can everyone see those?

Under the right lighting conditions (http://www.science-projects.com/Vision/Acuity.htm) it is an ordinary occurrence, even for NTs. Some NTs may be too busy to notice it but anyone with reasonably good vision is capable of seeing it.

Anyone with good eyesight can see dust, granted. But it takes someone of an Aspie mindset to pay attention to it, and it's beauty.

Yes, I see dust like that, and 'eye floaters' as well. And I don't even want to *think* about the water!

Dust rules! Woo! :D

Yes, dust is kind of nice to watch floating about in the early morning sunshine.
Eye floater's kind of look like something from under a microscope....they sort of bother me, a little.
As for water I can see little things floating in it (even bottled) and I'm very picky about which bottled water I'll drink. I have always felt water has a bad taste - well water, city tap water and even some bottled water all have a nasty taste to me. The filtered water is even salty.

I've always seen floating dust. My mom may have been able to to because when I mintioned it she would reply, "Oh that just means somebody has to vaccume." But then my mom never really doubted any of my "special abilties". I always thought NT people could see floating dust but now I'm beginning to wonder.

Yeah, I saw it in California all the time. In Indiana I don't, but there are things I haven't dusted in YEARS that are STILL CLEAN! In california I had to dust like every week.
