...and if so, does this make you feel culturally alienated? I'm in my early 20s, and most of my favorite movies, music, and literature are from before I was born. There are only a handful of contemporary creative works that I enjoy, whereas most people my age enjoy the majority of contemporary entertainment. I even have a hard time enjoying critically-acclaimed contemporary creative works. For example, I didn't like The Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, or Skyfall.

Meanwhile, the people I get along with the most are geeks, and they eat that stuff up. As a result, not only am I alienated from "cool" people, but from my fellow entertainment-obsessed geeks as well. I can't relate to anyone!

I'm curious. Do you watch The Big Bang Theory?

I've seen bits and pieces of it with my roommates. It's light-hearted fun, but nothing special from what I saw.

I have very random tastes in media and much of what I love is from long before my time. No one gives me any trouble over this. Most of my friends have similar taste, or at least their taste is random or eclectic enough that they would never dream of begrudging anyone their own special interests (hippies and artists are great friends!). Let's face it, some stuff is still great even though it's old, and they really don't make things how they used to. Look what they did to Star Wars! And you think they'll ever make another Dark Crystal? No, because they have computers to animate now. (Although in other countries, particularly where I live now, these old-fashioned methods of animation and design are still alive and well - look up Kuky se Vraci!)

It all just seems so mass-produced and cookie-cutter these days, everything built to a crowd-pleasing formula. Give me the old stuff any day.

Edit: Oh hey I just realized they made an English-dubbed version as well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBQbkbnj780

The reason I mention it is because it's a contemporary show which supposedly has a character with aspie traits. You could also say I'm old school. Most of the time the music I listen to was written by Beethoven or Tchaikovsky. These days my preference for movies are those where there is a fair amount of drunken folks in it, like 28 Days, Fat City, Being Flynn, Shakes the Clown, etc.

The only old movies I like are the older Godzilla movies, pretty much. I like Godzilla movies period, except for the 1998 American version. I don't like old music as well. The oldest I will listen to is from the 80's. My dad listens to a lot of 50's and 60's music, and I just don't like the way it sounds at all. Most of the music I do listen to is from video game soundtracks.

My taste in music is rather odd, and most of the stuff that I enjoy listening to is stuff others cant deal with.

- KrautRock band name of Can.
- Hawkwind (for Motorhead fans this was Lemmy Pre-motorhead). :)
- Amon Dull II

Just for a few examples.

Does it alienate me? not really.

I'm into 70's 80s and 90s music with a little early 2000's music mixed in. One of my favorite movies is The Italian Job the original film with Michael Caine.

Oh, me too, me too!!
Ever since I was a little kid, 6-7 yrs old, I had a good taste of old quality music. I listened to the radio and memorized my favourite songs. One of my aspie treats is exeptional memory regarding music. I can easily remember a song heard only once, and I still look (hear) for music I only heard once as 10-12 old. If I hear an almost identical version of the song, 20-30 years later, I can still spot the difference from the one I originally heard. (Which happened to me just weeks ago, finding a long lost song by Skeeter Davies. Ps. Not a typical song regaring my musical taste!)
I also remember every intro song at every tv-show for kids I ever saw between the age of 5 to 14, even though many of then was aired only 2-3 episodes.
Anyway, all this led me to listen to music that noone on my age listened to. As a grown up, I can easily look back and say that I probably had the best music taste of them all.

When it comes to films, 90%of the films I have on my smartphone is Sci-fi movies from the 50's and the 60's, where Forbidden planet with Leslie Nielsen is a favourite.

I like the Cosmic Music, too.

Is Kraftwerk Krautrock? I feel like maybe they started off as it, (with the two guys from Neu!) but they quickly became early dance music, about Radioactivity onward.

Can predates kraftwerk by 3 years.

Holger chuzay and irmin scmidt are the progenitors of krautrock

Kraftwerk is the only still active band in the genre

I think brian eno is the progenitor of ambient.

When I started listening to customized radio stations (anyone remember LaunchCAST?), I started liking older music as well as contemporary music. That's the way it still works for me.

I like a little bit of many different styles in both music and movies, and yeah, older stuff is good. Some of that is the normal "it's what I grew up with" (I'm 46, born in 1966). Sometimes it's because it's really good.

When I explain to my friends why I like it, some over-enthusiasm of Asperger's probably sticks out. But they are good friends and do not say anything to me.

I enjoy some classical music, some religious, some "pop" and some "oldies" (it was "pop" in its day, and it's what I grew up with). Some movie music seems very special to me, even if I don't know what is on the screen at the time. Maybe movie music is written differently -- no verses, chorus, etc. like religious or pop music, or maybe fewer pieces have lyrics at all.

EDIT: I have thought about it, and many movies in my collection have one theme. A misunderstood hero against the world (and hopefully the hero gets satisfaction in the end). A falsely accused criminal clears his name, a genius who is bullied makes a breakthrough in science or medicine, an honest police officer fights corrupt police AND criminals, you get the idea. ("He" can be a "she" or even a group of people.) The hero fights and overcomes large obstacles to get satisfaction and closure. Many times this means he shows his tormentors why he was right all along, but sometimes he won't. Also I have some comedies -- remember Denis Leary in "Operation Dumbo Drop"? He jumped onto a flat-bed truck and got elephant poop all over his military uniform. Funny. But, here again, you see the group of heroes overcoming many obstacles. Reminds me of being misunderstood as an Aspie, I guess.

I like all sorts of music swing, new age, rap, classical, classic rock heavy metal, melodic death metal. Old movies that as well Bella Legosse movies (maybe spelled wrong)as well as modern stuff you have to sort out the crap with the new stuff.

We (we're twin sisters) completely understand! We can't really relate to anyone either. Since we were about 7, we've been really into classic movies from the 30s-50s. Our classmates never knew what we were talking about when we'd say our favorite singer was Judy Garland and our favorite actresses were unknowns like Billie Burke (she played Glinda in The Wizard of Oz). We listen to music from the 20s and 30s mostly, though we do like a handful of "modern" songs from the late 60s to the early 90s. Anything past 1970 seems really modern to us! We never attended dances or anything as high schoolers because wecould not stand the horrible rap music the other kids liked. We don't find much creativity in contemporary music or film, either. We don't enjoy things like The Dark Knight etc either. So, at least we can relate to each other :) By the way, we're 22 also!

[hipster]

My tastes aren't so much "old-school" as they are highly specific.

In terms of movies, I prefer cult movies, indie flicks, and low-budget horror. I don't have television, just Netflix, so I mostly watch old shows. Music.....meh. I'm not big on music, but when I do listen to music, it's typically 90s grunge.

Yes, it does make me feel culturally alienated as I have no idea what people are talking about most of the time.
