...and if so, does this make you feel culturally alienated? I'm in my early 20s, and most of my favorite movies, music, and literature are from before I was born. There are only a handful of contemporary creative works that I enjoy, whereas most people my age enjoy the majority of contemporary entertainment. I even have a hard time enjoying critically-acclaimed contemporary creative works. For example, I didn't like The Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, or Skyfall.
Meanwhile, the people I get along with the most are geeks, and they eat that stuff up. As a result, not only am I alienated from "cool" people, but from my fellow entertainment-obsessed geeks as well. I can't relate to anyone!
We (we're twin sisters) completely understand! We can't really relate to anyone either. Since we were about 7, we've been really into classic movies from the 30s-50s. Our classmates never knew what we were talking about when we'd say our favorite singer was Judy Garland and our favorite actresses were unknowns like Billie Burke (she played Glinda in The Wizard of Oz). We listen to music from the 20s and 30s mostly, though we do like a handful of "modern" songs from the late 60s to the early 90s. Anything past 1970 seems really modern to us! We never attended dances or anything as high schoolers because wecould not stand the horrible rap music the other kids liked. We don't find much creativity in contemporary music or film, either. We don't enjoy things like The Dark Knight etc either. So, at least we can relate to each other
By the way, we're 22 also!
