Is there anyone here that has been diagnosed very late and surprised? I took the self administered test because my son is under evaluation. I am in my 40s and haven't been officially diagnosed by any medical professional. I was surprised by my high score and borderline autistic because I am a full functioning and productive person but looking back now I understand why my score is high. I was very shy when I was younger but attending toastmasters for one year helped tremendously. I had social anxiety issues in the past but mostly overcame it with hypnotherapy tapes and mindfulness exercises. Looking back, I see a few clear signs. I have friends but no best friends. Sometimes I make friends only to lose them for reasons that I can't figure out. Often I just dismissed it as people are not reliable. I have a Master's degree in Engineering and am absolutely focused on my job and I can't stand any distraction. I have some ADHD issues as well. I can't sit and work for more than one hour. I have to take a walk and then come back. I also have restless leg syndrome. I see trends in my family because my 2 younger brothers are very quiet and choose to avoid parties. My next younger brother's IQ is 150, mine is around 130 to 140. Both of us have stable careers and have been with our companies for over 20 years. I think my dad has ADHD because he can never stand still and extremely prone to accidents. He is 81 but still driving very recklessly. He was a high school principal. My older brother is an extrovert with many friends so this is not all genetic.

Surprised? Yes, I sure was. It seems odd now that I look back after being diagnosed for sure. My mental health problems were obvious enough, and I had felt for long time that there was something more lurking behind them - something which had always been there. But when a mental health worker first suggested autism when I was 45, I didn't have a clue what to make of it at first. The same as for many Joe Public, I had a lot of misconceptions about autism, so I couldn't see it at all to begin with. It's also not uncommon for people to first have suspicions when a loved one is being assessed; I've heard of it many times from new members on various forums, and in my case, it led to the realisation that my Mum shares many of the same traits.

Mine is 28, putting me in the in-between category.

Even though I have already been diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder (which is now ASD according to DSM-V), I have never taken this test before.

Curious, I searched online after reading this thread.

I took the quotient test, I scored 42/50. What that actually means, I am quite uncertain.

Do you have children and do they show any autistic tendencies?
Thanks.

My score is in this area too. I score more strongly in the Aspie range on other tests such as raads and even aspie quiz.

I also score borderline and I am diagnosed. I have always been too normal to be different and too different to be normal.

Mine was quite high, too, but when I learned about it all, things made quite a lot of sense.

A question: IQ of 130 to 140 and you were a high school principal? You must have been bored out of your mind!
I'm around 130 and often wish I had studied a STEM subject because I can't really find anything to do that doesn't get old and too easy quickly.

I don't have any children. I was never fortunate enough to get married. I have only had pets (cats and dogs), but don't have any indoor pets now. My last cat passed away two years ago at age 15.

I was diagnosed at age 50, after I stumbled upon this “thing” called Asperger’s.

I just took the AQ again (just for fun). I scored 42. Before learning about Asperger’s, I never thought of myself as “extreme”. I just considered myself mostly “normal” and others being a bit “off” (e.g. illogical, governed by emotion, etc.).

I am not certain if I am shy or not. I typically don’t talk to others, unless I have something meaningful/useful to say. Or they might be able to answer a question I have. So, at work, I am never “shy”. But, outside of work I am typically quiet.

I also joined toastmasters. I don’t mind speaking in front of people about topics I am familiar with (e.g. I don’t mind doing work-based presentations).

My older brother is an extrovert as well. Before learning about Asperger’s, I never quite understood how he could have so many friends. It used to make me sad that I was unable to make new friends. I suppose now, it doesn’t really bother me. I am over that.

Mine was 41 and I'm level 2. It's not uncommon for people to discover they're on the spectrum later in life after their child receives a diagnosis.

My AQ score was relatively high and I proudly self-diagnosed myself back around 2012 but I got some sense knocked back into me and realised that I was probably just trying to conform (confirmation bias) to my daughter's diagnosis.

Plenty of "mild" folks who function/operate adequately in mainstream society and there's no point trying to ingratiate yourself with people who are actually unable to function adequately in society because of their autism or comorbids.

Kind of like telling somebody with chronic major depression (MDD) that I have what you have because I am also feeling a little blue today.

It’s just an informal test and should not be taken that seriously.

Self-diagnosed at 32. I read a description of Asperger syndrome and it fit me, especially the parts about intense special interests and social awkwardness. Anxiety and panic attacks were also mentioned.
