I thought you might get a kick out of this. In the US, USA network is having a marathon of monk episodes. In "Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine", Monk decides to take a medicine to make him more normal. He starts to feel better! He acts more stereotypically normal!

So what is the folly:

1. He STILL doesn't fit in.
2. He is too naive, etc...
3. He loses his talents, and every other benefit he had.

In the end, he HAPPILY goes back to as he was!

Wow. The drug company commerical sponsors won't get mad though if they actually showed someone with a "mental illness" not benefitting greatly from prescription medications? Maybe there is some progress being made towards self-determination and respecting of differences. Doesn't seem like there is most of the time though - every article and TV show may make a difference.

A prime example of the faults of the pro-cure attitude. I love that show, btw.

http://www.usanetwork.com/series/monk/w ... index.html this is mr monk

Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional methods and out-of-the-box thinking to solve some of the department's most baffling cases.

But after the tragic (and still unsolved) murder of his wife, a devastated Monk became obsessive-compulsive. Now plagued by various phobias, almost everything causes him angst: germs, heights, crowds -- even milk. His condition eventually cost him his job, and continuously poses unique challenges as he goes about his daily life. He is in therapy for his condition, but signs of progress in overcoming his psychological disorder are spotty at best.

Now working as a private consultant, Monk continues to investigate various cases using his vast intelligence and unconventional approaches. However, Monk would like nothing more than to gain back his position on the force. Can he pull himself together and get back to solving San Francisco's toughest crimes full time?

One more thing. I consider it and columbo to be the two best who done its ever on TV. Ellery queen is too unlikely. Murder she wrote, matlock, etc... are merely replays of lucky chances. I think even sherlock holmes assumes too much. Columbo and monk both have clues they find by looking, and manage to fit them together. BTW both are "tv shows".

Columbo's hook is that he appears to be a recluse(although he was married, they never showed his wife, and they later created a series mrs columbo that didn't last long), dresses like a bum(old trenchcoat, etc...), and drives an old import junk car. He always seems to come back, and takes copious notes. The criminals always assume he is an idiot, until he solves the case.

Monk's hook is that he is afraid of almost everything, but fights it, goes around with a nurse, has a great eye for detail, a great memory, and is the epitome of a person with OCD. The criminals always assume he is an idiot, until he solves the case.

I don't even know if they have such sponsors. Still, they DID make it seem like he was happy ON the drugs. He was a slob, naive, and a braggart(things he wasn't when he was off the drugs), but otherwise seemed better. You almost start feeling happy about it until you see that it made him INCAPABLE of doing what he was paid to do, and known for. That was ironic, as that was all he had to brag about!

Frankly, I think they did a good job. It was fair and balanced.

Wish I'd seen that episode ! ! Love the show. Shaloub's acting is great, and the stories are usually very well written. If you havn't seen it, as an ASpie, you owe it to yerself to check it out.

It's a shame. It was one of tony shaloubs favorites also! They MIGHT show it during the 1/14 or 2/4 marathons. Outside of that, it looks like they won't show it again for at least 2 months. 8-(
