Has anyone here ever tried Melatonin to help with sleep?? I am thinking about it trying with my son but wanted to know some opinions from others who have tried it. I take it myself because I have trouble falling asleep. My pediatrician says to just use Benedryl but only because she is unsure about what Melatonin does. He does respond well to the Benedryl however. I guess I am just curious!

The Missus takes it regularly, with no side effects. Once in awhile I'll use it. It certainly helps me calm down and sleep. It does give me vivid dreams, which I guess it does initially.

melatonin worked for me , is amazing for jet lag too. Its only really good for short term sleep disorders and to get you back into a sleeping pattern tho I've read that it can cause sleep problems with long term use.

I alternate between metatonin and valerian ... valerian works well , is herbal and best as tincture or compressed pills as the tea is the worst most vile stuff I've ever had

i tried valerian a couple of times, it actually gave me really bad nightmares and i woke up freaking out!! the smell of the tincture is a bit overpowering as well. i dropped the bottle, breaking the lid, and it took weeks for the smell to subside in my kitchen. so i can imagine what the tea might taste like...

melatonin i've never tried, but i know the brain apparently naturally produces it while you sleep. a problem can arise if you sleep with the light on or the curtains open during the day, as the brain apparently only produces it when you are asleep in total or almost total darkness.

Melatonin is derived from tryptophan, and is harmless. I'm surprised anyone requires a perscription for it. In the US you can get it almost anywhere. I tried it, and it did NOTHING for me! BTW if your doctor doesn't know what melatonin is, FIRE HIM!! !! ! He is NO good! Melatonin is supposed to be one of the required hormones that regulates sleep! ANY doctor should know that, ESPECIALLY since many lay people do!

I've tried it; it does nothing for me. I've heard that it works for some people, and it doesn't for others.
But yes, it's harmless.

Melatonin is relatively harmless. I myself use it when I'm too wound up from mental chatter to get to sleep. The trouble is if I take more than a quarter of a 3mg tablet, I get excessively hung over! On a quarter tablet, I have woken up after four hours.

I occasionally use Melatonin when I have trouble sleeping, and it works very well. However, I have found that if I take a 3 milligram dose, I feel like crap the next morning and it takes me forever to get going. I don't seem to have that problem with a 1 mg dose. Of course, your mileage may vary.

ok thanks everyone. I think I will try it on him. I take it all the time but I usually only do 2 mg. I buy it in 1 mg. tablets so I can choose whether I want 1 2 or 3. It just seems that Benedryl makes you drowsy in the morning, at least on me it does! He is always drowsy in the morning! I thought maybe this would do better for him naturally without any side effects

melatonin has been great for me- I credit it for giving me my life back in allowing me to reliably get sleep.

One thing- you must take it about 1/2 hour before bed. Don't try taking it if you don't have 8 hours to sleep, because you will wake up worse off, feeling unbelievably tired.

Narcotics (notably vicodin) put me out like a light as well. If I don't have the 8 hours to take a melatoning pill, I will take one of the remaining vicodin pills, and that will put me out. I wouldn't recommend that for a kid though...

It's worthless if you have DSPS.

You'll wake up in an hour or so.

My understanding has been that it tends to work best for people who suffer from a deficiency, such as in my own case; 9mgs always produces a nice sedative effect for me at bedtime. (You should never go over that amount in a single dose, btw.)

No offence Nice how you guys use products to get to sleep, I normaly try all the other stuff before the use of any stuff, ie: basicly the hole check list of things you do wrong to not be able to get to sleep, Most people fall asleep with machine's that output a certain noise...

Seems when you go to a doc the only thing they push under your nose are drugs... Unless you ask for the other methods...

I've used it for years. After taking it for a while the effect seems to wear off, but as soon as I go off it I sleep well for a week or two. Then I go back on it for several weeks, etc., etc.

Doctors don't like to prescribe it (in my opinion) because it must be relatively easy to produce. The big "reputable" drug companies wouldn't make enough money from it to pay for the expensive studies required if they promoted it.

I have terminal insomnia -- not as bad as it sounds; it means that I have trouble sleeping past the middle of the night, so I often take it when I wake in the middle of the night in order to get a full night's sleep.

It didn't work for me. I Fix my sleep cycle by excersizing before bed.
