Hey, this is FUN!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_of_the_dark

Although I realise I'm probably not being very helpful this time.

this one i dont think a actually have, i think one phobia is enough for the time being, and i dont really get panic attacks in the dark like i would when faced with my actual fear. :)

When it is pitch black, I kind of 'surrender' to it. I imagine I am an entity in a void or something and take in the experience. if I am in a situation which is scary, I usually also surrender to it, and feel it, and think 'whatever happens happens, and if I die, then I will know'

I once had an extremely vivid dream in which I was in a car which went through a rail and plunged over a cliff. I totally believed I was going to die. My last thoughts?
"Holy crap, this is REALLY IT!! I am really about to see what happens after I die!" No fear, just intense fascination.
But then I woke up. Bummer. :(

Well, I suppose I should say something a bit more qualitative at some point. All I can really say though is that I'm not really a phobic person at all. I have a very low "disgust" threshold so I behave pretty phobically towards slimy things like slugs and old food, but it's not actually fear induced. However, I have panicked in the dark once or twice, mostly after working myself up with some kind of paranoia. I also used to have major dermatophagia as mentioned in your other post (http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt223384.html) so I've put another response re. that bit there.

thanks, i cant imagine having dermatophagia very severe, from reading about it must be very difficult to stop, did you have something like CBT, i have had that before, it really helps with unhelpful behaviour, you know like panicking.

No, I don't think I needed that since it didn't really seem anxiety induced to me. It all started with biting my nails from a very young age and my mother was forever trying to make me stop. At some point she succeeded and I just moved on to the skin around my fingers instead. She either didn't notice or didn't care so much about that so it continued for years and I didn't mind either even though the tips of my fingers were often red-raw. I think it finally stopped when I started horticulture - mud ingrained skin turns out to be a major disincentive!

Nowadays I tend to pick at scars and scratches, of which I have many due to my beautiful, frisky monster cat who's sitting on top of my left hand right now (he always likes to sit on his prey for a while before trying to eat it).

The dark....

I vaguely remember a cutscene from Splinter Cell: Conviction in which Sam tells his daughter that darkness can be an ally.

I tend to lean towards that sentiment as I am usually awake at night and asleep during the day to the point where my day is like everyone else's night.

I'm very afraid of the dark, and I don't mind admitting it. I've tried and tried to pinpoint the source in childhood of my fear, but I haven't been able to nail it down to anything specific.

I use a moonlight simulating LED for a nightlight, it projects a spot as bright as the full moon on a clear night.
When the electicity flickers it goes out and has to be reset. If the light is out when I wake up in the middle of the night I end up with my head under the covers.
I know that is silly but it lets me get back to sleep.
