While this was 35 years ago, I was taken to a specialist for children who were suspected of having learning disabilities or mild autism; Dr. Harris Greenwald in Los Angeles (still in practice last time I checked). I remember basically what it was like: The visit was a basic physical exam (measuring bones, overall making sure everything is developed physically as correct for age). As far as the rest of it, I was given the test where you are shown ink blots, and tell what you see in them, and the test with the wooden pieces of various geometric shapes to be put a certain way to form a pyramid, etc., under a timer. Further, there were reading, writing, basic math, and maybe other scholastic tests. I don't recall any deep psychological questioning by that doctor, although my regular psychiatrist had gone through all that, and maybe the findings were already of record.

The doctor made recommendations as to what kind of special ed program I might do well with, and he may or may not have actually made a diagnosis of a learning disability or autism. I wish I had the records, but he destroyed them after 10 years per the rules.
