My theory is that people who suffer from severe comorbids, such as social anxiety, are more likely to favor a cure for autism. Given the successful stem cell treatments for NVLD that have taken place in India, it's likely that a cure for the closely related Asperger's Disorder is not a far off possibility.

I am probably quite avoidant, and I don't really want a cure.

I wouldn't really know what to classify myself as. Technically, I can "function" in society, but I have almost no friends to speak of, and I'm crushingly lonely. I'd love a cure.

I'm not socially anxious (I am socially avoidant, but not because of anxiety), and undecided about whether I'd like a cure for myself.

interesting post, and it looks like your theory is holding up well so far. i myself am kind of an exception, as i'm avoidant as all hell, but feel wary of a cure at best. don't get me wrong, i don't believe in romanticizing the condition as misunderstood genius or anything like that. it is a disability, plain and simple. but i feel very wary about what a cure would mean, as it seems very vague in my mind and could carry with it other side effects or whatnot that i may not care for. the human mind is a complex thing and we still don't know what's going on in there quite, or so it seems to me.

After tasting NT bliss while on Zyprexa for a month last year, there is no option except to find a cure...

Social anxiety in some form is pretty much required and standard for anyone with Aspergers isn't it? making the question somewhat invalid, I beleave the level of resistance to a cure is most largly based on ones state of mind as far self accpetence, quality of life, expectation of future, self satisfaction level etc. Actually any life issue for any NT would follow the same criteria I think.
As for a cure the stem cell cure is more of treatment then a cure anyway and hardly practical, I highly doubt a doctor would want to treat a decently fuctioning person with AS with such a drastic measure.

I have a lot of social anxiety, and though I have no idea if I have avoident PD or not I certainly do have traits of it so it's a possibility...but then it might just be the anxiety in general. Anyways I would not want a cure, I already feel clueless as to who exactly I am and I feel like a cure would just confuse me further, not to mention I don't think being neurotypical would make all the issues i have go away..and there isn't a cure yet so its probably best to just learn how to best function as is.
