When I was probably around 14 or so, I stumbled upon the AQ test and decided to give it a try. I scored a 23. Now, 8 years later I decided to take the test for a second time... I scored a 38. How is this possible? I feel like my social skills are regressing. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I have my score vary according to the frame of mind I'm in when I take it again. It tends to be higher when I'm tired, falling-down-hungry, stressed or more anxious than usual. For you it's bound to stay a bit higher on average merely due to the fact that you didn't have as many adult things to worry about previously. Take it again on a well-played day and it 's likely to be lower

It could be that since you are more mature, you are also more honest with your own strengths and weaknesses. I had a similar experience with the AQ. I think most aspie teenagers are not socially conscious enough to make an accurate judgement on their own abilities. It's also much less painful if you can lie to yourself and convince yourself that you're A-okay. It's a problem with psychological questionnaires in general.

I've in a similar situation as well, I've done it 4 times, my second last result being 22 and my most recent being 30. It depends a lot on your state of mind at the time of taking the test. Also as an online self-reporting test that can be completed in a short period of time, its accuracy is limited and honesty plays a big role in it.

I also went through a stage in my life where I felt my social skills regressing (and my low result of 22 was before that). But coming to think of it I now think it hasn't really, it just appears to be (confirmed by some of my friends who have known me from before I started feeling worse about my social skills). This is just due to different circumstances, for example being in university where to meet new people more effort is needed than in school where people often talk to you anyway cause school's smaller and you get the chance to discuss work with others in class). So it depends on what's been going on around you (say you have a bad experience with someone, then you might feel worse about yourself). It's even possible your social skills haven't really deteriorated (or as much as you think), though there's not enough information to be able to tell for sure.

It may have been this, and there is also the theory that we move up and down the Autism spectrum at different points in our lives...

You're probably more aware of your own autistic traits.

As I became more aware of my autistic traits, my AQ score increased.
