Has anybody already done the footwork on this? Is there any reliable data for or against the idea that ultrasounds can "cause" autism?

it's a new idea which hasn't been adequately studied yet.

I did not research this at all however of all the speculated ideas this is not the crazyist in my opinion, could only account for increses not Autism if self since its older then ultrasounds.

On the face of it, it sounds like a ridiculously absurd joke.

so what happened to the genetic link? - my father and father-in-law were both born before ultra-sound, and so were me and my partner

Genetic link is still on the table and will stay on the table for quite some time, as it's the most complex possibility. Mind you, there's thousands of possibilities. Each one is considered and is eliminated.

In my opinion, IF ultrasounds can cause autism, which is extremely doubtful, it's just like vaccines (something else I don't believe causes autism). The benefits far exceed the risk. Look how many severe congenital abnormalities and pregnancy complications are detected via ultrasound. I've never even heard the rationale for this bizarre argument. I mean, at least the vaccine people claimed thimerosal, but how can sound waves affect brain development?

I really think they need to stop publicizing every random hypothesis under the sun. I recognize the need to explore the issue from many different avenues, but when the media and public latch on to them it seems to do more harm than good sometimes. My former doctor limited what vaccines she would provide, and cited the autism/vaccination link as one of her reasons. This was the person I'm supposed to look to for for my health and medical guidance? WTF?!? How many of the studies are independent, and contain a wide enough amount of representation, time, and positive statistics to back them up?

One thing to remember is that many different things can cause brain damage. The error in many conjectures is to assume that anything that causes brain damage is the cause of autism.

The fact that ASD is more widely diagnosed these days stems mostly from the fact that people are better educated and able to recognise the symptoms more readily in their children and themselves. There is history of HFA in my family going on for generations. People with HFA grow up and change in many ways, often making them indistinguishable from the general population. It's been around for millennia and definitely enriched humanity.
The idiocy and hysteria surrounding causes of ASD should stay in tabloids and in the minds of hysterical idiots. Definitely not in the minds of self-respecting people who understand the trials and tribulations of attaining empirical knowledge about nature.

^^Novel thought^^

Both of my kids had many ultrasounds because I had high risk pregnancies. However, to assume their wiring is related to that would completely ignore the fact that my mother never had an ultrasound with me and my grandma definitely never had an ultrasound with my dad. So in our case I am fairly sure it is in the genes! :)

This may be off topic, but it was kind of strange anyway.

About twenty years ago, I was at a dance performance by the Delia Stewart Dance Company in Houston. In the row ahead of me was a group of people who clearly came in together.

During intermission I stayed in my seat as did everyone in the row in front of me. One of the women in the row ahead started passing baby pictures back and forth and everyone else was oohing and ahing looking at them. Out of curiosity, I leaned forward and got a peek at the baby pictures.

They weren't baby pictures, at least in the normal sense. They were pictures from the ultrasound that she had just had!

100% of autistics were born. Perhaps we should investigate the link between birth and autism.

Maybe the stress of delivery causes a rush of fear hormones that, in susceptable fetus/babies, causes a sudden rapid overgrowth of the amygdala.

Given that they refer to it repeatedly as "autistic disease," they can basically kiss my ass whether they have a valid line of reasoning or not.

Hmmm. I had, like, half a dozen ultrasounds with my littlest. So far she's developing normally, but I wonder if we've got higher odds of having another little Aspie chick in the family. 8)

God I am soooooooo selfish.
