The first book I was referred to after being diagnosed as an Aspie was Liane Holliday Willey's book : "Pretending to be Normal"

The doctor got upset with me after I told her, yes, I read the book : "Pretending to be AbNormal" ;o

Anyway, lately, I had been looking at the more "conspiratorial" theories behind the cause(s) of Autism, and I am just face-palming at the blame being put onto the Vaccines being the cause of Autism, when they actually should instead say that the Additives are correlated, rather than the Vaccines themselves. Must be some sort of Mind-Control phenomenon that makes these people mistakenly say that Vaccines are the problem (they are not), rather than the Additives/Preservatives causing potential problems (this I can accept), and even The Messiah had written that he knows that he would not be alive today if not for the "miracle" that his vaccines provided him in protection against Malaria and other fatal-diseases. Alright, now that I has ranted a bit (for today is Caturday), I will move on with what I have learned, and it may be able to help some of you, too.

Typical Aspie Experience : All of the buildings and surroundings look the damn same so of COURSE I'm going to get lost a lot !

Yup, believe it or not, I used to get lost, ALL the damn time, and I mean, RIDICULOUSLY lost, even often spending 2-3 hours or more, driving around trying to find my own damn apartment... however, although I did not understand it at first when I received training to be a Carpet-Technician, I will now teach you guys how to find your way around, most of the time, within ANY city, even without directions or a map. Are you ready!? Alright...

...within most of America, the roads tend to run in a grid, and this grid is laid out in a manner where Avenues run North and South whilst Streets run East and West... just as long as these Streets/Avenues are not named after people you should be able to find your way around. Let me explain... when you see "Main Street" (because every city in America should have such a street), you count that as the centre-line, something like 0th Street. Now let us say you decided to take a turn FROM Main Street, and the cross-roads show you 1st St NE, then 2nd St NE, eventually to 10th St NE, etc. What this means is that you are now in the North-Eastern Quadrant of the city, and are heading North, because numbers of Streets/Avenues get bigger the further you get from the City Centre.

Try absorbing what I described in my previous paragraph. Let me pop a quiz now. Suppose you found yourself at the cross-roads of 147th St E and 37th Avenue S. Can you guess approximately which part of the city you are in based on that information ? You would be correct to estimate something of around 147 blocks to the South then another 37 blocks East from the centre of the city (South South-East from the city's centre). Without a compass, you will know that you are going North if you turn onto an Avenue, and following that Avenue shows 146th St E followed by 145th St E followed by lower-numbered St E if the Avenue you are on indicates that you are on some Avenue S. You are going South if the numbers end up increasing, such as 148th St E followed by 149th St E then 150th St E and increasing numbers, meaning that you need to turn around if you wish to move in a North-Bound direction.

This information should help at least some of you with the issue of getting lost when traveling (driving).
Let the rest of us know if you have any other methods we Aspies can use to compensate and hide our HFA ! ;o

That's all well and good in the US. Try living in the UK where there is no logical system to it at all. Totally random. Even the SatNav hasn't got a clue half the time.

Very cool. Ban Dodger. Thank you for posting that. I actually learned some truly helpful information from your post.

Getting lost while driving could arise from Directional Dyslexia, but whether its related to ASD doesn't seem to have been explored at all:

My husband also gets lost too, this is also true for people who have NVLD. GPS really helps him. He also gets turned around in stores while I have a good sense of direction. I can go in a store and know where the front entrance is. I can drive and I can find my way towards something because I know which was the main road is so I go that direction.
