I wonder if it might be harder to diagnose deaf people because there's a communication barrier between the patient and the specialist.

I've met deaf people with aspergers in support groups.

I've noticed some traits in some deaf friends of mine, so no, probably not. There's bound to be quite a few.

I don't know but I know I am looking forward to my first sign language class later on this month. Squee. I've always wanted to learn sign language and I don't know why. It's a bit odd.

Anyway, how did you get diagnosed, I mean I would assume people would have been dismissing a lot of the AS symptoms as something to do with your deafness?

It must be a bugger when you want to examine someone's facial expressions while they speak, but you have to concentrate on their lip-movements instead,.

I don't know any other deaf aspies, although there might be one or two on some of the online deaf communities.

I know of one, but I don't think she comes to WP. There's got to be some. Both autism and deafness are quite common. And there are quite a few of us who have auditory processing issues to the point that spoken language is near-useless; some of them have sign languages like ASL, or simplified versions, as a first language.

You are probably not the only one, but as deafness is not common the subset that contain both "people with deafness" and "people with AS" is probably very small.

I would love to know if you face any unique situations or difficulties that the combination of deafness and AS give you that are not found in either group alone.

I have taken ASL courses because when I go mute (selective-mutism in stressful/ high sensory environments) I can still sign (because my brain seems to process signs like pictures and not like verbal information). I do have trouble when signing to the deaf community because I do not easily connect facial expressions with my signing. So I have a flat face, where my teacher said I needed a dynamic face to better express myself, that signing is not just the hands but also the body language and facial expressions.
If you have any insight on this I would be appreciative.

Well this is awkward. Several people have just told you they don't know any Deaf people on WP, yet they know of me and have been involved with discussions where I have given rather an abundance of information about Deaf autistics and/or sign language several times in the past month. I must not be very memorable at all.

Asperger's/Autism is much more common in the profoundly D/deaf than in the general population and I have posted information several times recently about it. If you'd like to know more I'm definitely the one to talk to! As others have pointed out here before: It's one of those things I info-dump about quite regularly.
