Should I get an autism wristband or medical alert wristband for myself?

My symptoms are noticeable. My skin is sensitive to non "pure" metals (unsure if I can wear stainless steel), also a loose metal bracelet may annoy me.
Once I am able to be more independent (I am waiting for SSI eligiblity under Autism, not Asperger's) I was wondering if it would be helpful or necessary because:

So far, my verbal communication difficulties vary much:
1. I can be slow to respond or making simple verbal requests (may become easily frustrated enough to shutdown, perhaps self-harm as a result).

2. May use a sound to communicate instead of words when something bothers me, sometimes forgetting that I have the option to write instead of speak.

3. Sometimes become irrational when upset and try to leave where I am (speech is limited then and I lose awareness of danger). I am unable to think clearly like this and probably would not remember to pull out an "I have autism" card.

4. Have multiple disabilities including 'ideational dyspraxia' -I can temporarily lose how to make simple or complex movements, and slower ability to understand and follow spoken directions.

Any thoughts?

I think it might be potentially helpful to have a "I am on the Autism Spectrum . . " card immediately behind your ID. This would be a card designed for a police officer. (other cards might be designed for a medical professional)

It would be more of a backup. If you forget when upset, so be it. You can show it when you remember later. Something printed is more likely to be taken seriously than something merely verbally said, even if it's something you print yourself.

I was given a small card on diagnosis to show to relevant people. I think they are available from the autistic society in the UK

Yeah, that's a problem when it comes to bracelets and necklaces, they can be very irritating. But I'd say try a surgical stainless steel (you should be okay with that) ball chain necklace and a medallion with Medical Alert symbol on it like this:

I've found these types of chains to be the most tolerable:

I have a medical ID necklace (I cannot wear bracelets as they annoy me) that says "autism" as well as my psychosis and haemophilia. I would recommend it. I was found by the police a while ago and I was non-verbal. The necklace helped.

There are 2 types of stainless steel, the cheap kind that can be picked up by a magnet and appears grainy and the good kind that can't be picked up with a magnet and looks really smooth.

The bottom link is the ball chain i have my tags on, the tags are military shape and you can also serperately buy rubber that goes around the tags so they don't make noise and clink together like military camo ones =)
I really like the ball chains too. The person who makes them and sells them here's a link to the one i have:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Autism-ID-Dog-T ... 4ce602e4ba

It says Person with autism may not respond to verbal commands and has the symbol and medical alert comes with chain for $7

They also make laser etched medical autism ones that just say Autism with a medical alert symbol.

I like mine the best since it has the autism ribbon and all the colors. I've had them for years and had to get new ones a couple years ago since they started to wear. the only time i take them off is in the shower.

Chloe33, I like the colorful Autism dog tag! I wonder if the tag is stainless steel or sterling silver?

Silver still tarnishes if i wear it... i liked the colors too =)
