Sometimes I do it, but it's on accident, and I realize afterwards.

I haven't done it, to the best of my knowledge, but apparantly it IS very common with AS! Obviously, it isn't TOO bad with you, and you realize it, so that is half the battle! 8-)

All these things, and your mother STILL doesn't accept it? INCREDIBLE! Parents can be WIERD!

OH, OK! I never saw you doing it here, and you mentioned it. I guess you have to try to think more about what you want to say. It is a good idea anyway. I'm trying to do it myself. Oh well, you and Bob Dole have something in common. 8-/ Seriously though, there HAVE been others here that said they have the same problem.

It's common for autistic children when they're learning to talk. My son doesn't do it any more but remarkably I have learned to do it when I talk to him. Pronouns are still pretty taxing to him, so when he having a hard time understanding, I substitute names and titles for them. It really helps him understand what's going on. He frequently refers to other people with names and titles.
"Mom, where is your husband?"
"Mom, are you and your husband eating?"
"Dad, are you talking your wife, my mother?"

Blackcat, if you ever get the hang of things, write a self-help book for undiagnosed aspies. It would assist in paying off your college loans if nothing else, and I'd buy it. You're demonstrating another autie/aspie trait, and this one is just as harmless as the funny walking. If people have a problem with it, gently remind them that uptight twads are to be seen and not heard. Socially dismembering the incurably ludicrous and the hopelessly conservative should be the highest mission of any aspie.

If you have trouble with it, remember this: You are important, so it is good to reference yourself as I!

I usually don't do this in a conversation, but when my speech is all mixed up because of stress, I will refer to myself in third person too.
I do refer to myself in second and third person in my thoughts. It just occured me that I do this all the time as I was reading your topic!

Actually in japan its normal for children (under 15 or so) to refer to themselves in third person.

It may seem strange to most western societies but that doesnt necessarily make it strange.

in many languages, the pronouns are incorporated into the words (ie- verb tense ect.)... so instead of having the pronouns, you just have more words.

maybe this is one reason why english is one of the harder languages to learn.
