Read a theory about Asperger's/Autism the other day which stated that a possible cause of autism was a lack of oxygen to the brain before birth. I wondered whether extra weight put on by the expectant mother could have caused something like this? My mother put on 40 lbs. with me, but only 9 lbs with my brother. I'm ASpie, he's not. It made me curious if others here on the boards could back up my theory. Just curious....

Never heard of that. Makes me wonder if there's a correlation to gestational diabetes.

Pretty sure my mom gained quite a bit of weight while pregnant with me, but mainly because she was also pregnant with my twin brother. :P

My mom doesn't even remember. She has said she gained 35 with me and she has said she gained 20 with me. Let's see, I remember her telling me she weighed 134 and then she was 168 right before she had me. Then she said she weighed in the 150's and then was 148 after she gave birth and a week later she was back down to 134 and weighed a little less.

Well, I was born cyanotic. Probably the umbilical cord was strangling me. So in my case there definitely was a lack of oxygen to the brain.

My mom didn't gain any significant weight aside from the average weight gain for pregnancy. I did have the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck four times, and I was born late as well. I was pretty close to dying from lack of oxygen. :chin:

My mother was actually thinner at the time of my birth than she was when she became pregnant.

That's pretty far fetched. Where did you get the idea the weight gain caused lack of oxygen to the brain?

In answer to your question... I have no idea how much weight she gained, but she was in labor for 48 hours.

I don't know for sure if my mom had gestational diabetes nor how much weight she gained, but I was a huge baby and my mom had to have a caesarian. My mom also developed pre-eclampsia in the last couple of months she was pregnant and ended up in the hospital ordered to strict bed rest.

I just wondered whether the mother being very heavy may in some way crowd the fetus or put pressure on the umbilical cord or something along those lines. Your response is interesting in that your mother being in labor for so long may have had the same effect of cutting off oxygen to the brain.

Interesting also is that several of you either had problems with the umbilical cord being around your necks or were part of sets of twins or triplets -- another version of crowding. Hmm...
