Out of desperation I picked up some 3mg Melatonin pills while I was out today. I'm going to try one tonight. Is there anything that I should know first?

Please tell me that there is a chance that these will help me sleep! I can't live like this :(

It can work. Take it and do something relaxing and boring, if you are excited your body will over ride it. You will start to feel the pull of kind of sleepy, just go with the feeling and do no fight it.

I find it effective. I take 3mg most nights and it does help. The only nights it does not work is when I am super excited or anxious. In those cases I need to take something for anxiety first.

They work. My daughter takes them, and they get her to sleep. She wakes up in the night though so we are about to start the timed-release ones to keep her asleep. Apparently the biggest issue can be headaches.

they wont knock you out like a prescription pill but they help. I take 6-9mg


it also gives me really vivid and weird dreams

It only works if you're deficient.

Your body gets used to it after a while and it stops working.

It knocked me out and gave me really vivid bad dreams.
Valerian root works,I'd rather take that.

Works great, I use it most nights when I can't sleep. Your body has to be ready for bed though, take it before a lazy hour.

Like jellycat said they only work for so long... If i take 3mg day after day, by the 4th or 5th day I start showing signs of increased insomnia. I usually reserve it for nights that i really need sleep, like an important day at work the next day.

Corroborating what others said about it, basically. I only use it a couple times a week max though.

On nights I'm not starting to feel tired an hour or two before I want to go to sleep, I take one about 30-60 before sleepy times and do something relaxing and don't fight the urge to fall asleep when it comes. I've noticed if I fight it or am too excited by something when it starts to kick in, it doesn't work very well for me either. I only take 3mg, but other doses might work better for other people.

Without melatonin I almost never ever remember my dreams. I do seem to remember my dreams a bit more with the melatonin, but they're not bad dreams and also I kinda take that as a sign that my sleep cycles (REM vs other kinds of sleep and so on) are a bit different with the melatonin. I don't mind the dreams since mine don't seem to be bad (just weird).

I wouldn't recommend taking it for long periods.. I had a heck of a time getting off it because my body didn't want to manufacture it's own any more. :?

I've taken it when I've had really, really bad insomnia and it did work.

I had extremely bizarre, and sometimes unsettling dreams, though. I also felt very odd for hours after I woke up the next day.

I've been taking melatonin every night for over 2 years and it still works. I have more dreams or I remember more, but they are good dreams.

I take 'em every now and then to get to sleep, it's not like a zonked out of your skull kind of sleepy like you get from some more... potent sleep aids, it's just a kind of natural sleepy feeling. Only thing you might want to watch for is fairly vivid dreams, at least with the higher doses.

It's prescription only over here, but you can order it from UK websites that bring it in from abroad (usually the USA).

Depending on your sleep problems, there is quick-release and timed-release. I wouldn't go for a high dose one, even though they are available, apparently you only need a really tiny dose. I'd say no more than 3mg.

Obviously ordering from the internet, check on the brand and their quality control procedures for ingredients before you purchase.
