I'm 62yo, got first dentures (replacing 2 lower teeth) yesterday. Is it possible that I have a low pain threshold because of Asperger's - which we didn't take into account. I'm having a hard time believing that people live with a mouthful of this hardware. It hurts so much I left it in a drawer today. Maybe forever. I'm not trying to blame things on AS, but if it's true about the pain threshold then I'll go back to dentist. I really hope you'll answer - I'm supposed to get another denture for 4 upper teeth).

You should talk to your dentist about getting your denture relined, and do discuss the possibility of low pain threshold.

I have no special knowledge of dentures or AS pain threshold. I'll state my opinion any way. My opinion is that the AS low pain threshold could be a factor, but it's more likely that the denture is not fitting well in your gum. I think something like that happens very commonly with any dental procedure. I have had crowns and fillings made for my teeth, but they often had to be adjusted a little because the shape was not exactly right and I felt pain/discomfort. I think you should just mention it to your dentist and I'm sure they will try to adjust it for you. You might also need some time to get used to it. I hope you get it sorted soon. My mum had a similar problem for a few months recently and it affected her joy of eating so much. In a long term it could affect your health in general, too. I'm so relieved that now her tooth is back to normal.

dentures always hurt the first few days.
i myself have a very high pain threshold (mainly due to aspergers) and when i got my braces, i could not chew on anything for the first two days; even crustless bread was too much. after those first days however, i got used to them, the pain disappeared and i could eat and live normally again.

Aspergers is known for a low irritation threshold. Things like clothing tags and wearing jewelry can drive an aspie nuts.

I have three bridges and it took a wile for them to not be irritating/annoying. Sometimes I wanted to get pliers and yank them out. Just because they were foreign objects attached to me.

As far as actual pain after having work done, that's only been a matter if they gave me injections or if the gums were cut or bused in the process of the work done. One of my bridges came loose recently and the dentist shoved really hard on it, when I got it re-cemented. So my gums were pretty sore for a few days after.
