Nothing is 100%, but it seems likely Neanderthals existed.
Archeology can indeed be a little wishy-washy with people filling in blanks as they see fit, but it's gotten better than it was a century ago.
Why do you ask this question?

I think people just want to see what they want to see. Simple as that.
To me it is obvious that the neanderthaler, different humans, are just genetic variations of the homo sapiens sapiens.
And I think sooner or later people have to delete the neanderthaler speculations.
Why is it likely that they existed?

They have skeletons and they have DNA (it has even been sequenced). Yes they existed, and were most likely a separate species we did not interbreed with.
They maybe wrong classified a homo sapiens weird skeleton as neanderthaler skeleton.
Today we have very much different skeletons, no1 is the same.

Look at anyone with a short stocky build and a heavy brow and there is a good chance they have a large splash of Neanderthal DNA. Not as funny as it sounds. I watched a TV documentary in which a well-known UK personality did some investigation about Neanderthals and this was what they said.

Do you know how DNA works?

What is your point?
The articles you cite are also speculation, nothing is black on white, so I assume neanderthaler hype will be soon gone.
