so I've been in and out of college since 2005, was only diagnosed 6 months ago, and I found out literally 10 minutes ago that I am accepted into a program for Polysomnographic Technology
I've struggled a lot trying to find a job that's right for me, with retail giving me horrible meltdowns and the social aspects of school being really challenging to the point I've dropped out 10 times....but being a PSG-tech entails spending most of your time sitting in front of a computer, only 3 nights a week, watching people sleep. you wear scrubs all the time so clothing isn't an issue (I hate business attire) and because it's a sleep clinic, it's naturally very unlikely for you to be overstimulated, and you work with no more than 1 or 2 patients per night, and almost never have to deal with blood or bodily fluids or any of that. after you hook up the monitoring equipment you spend your night watching people's brain waves as they dream, which I find fascinating!
the program I was just accepted into has a 100% in-field job placement rate and only takes 1 year to finish. when I graduate I have a very very good chance of finding a middle class job in a gay-accepting city, when I've struggled for my whole adult life to hold down minimum wage crap jobs in the bible belt, and am currently living with my parents and applying for disability as a last resort.
this changes everything for me and is the first real hope I've had in several years of having a successful, independent life. they only accept 8 people per year into this program so I was really nervous I wouldn't make it.
my comorbid issues are quite severe and have kept me from living a normal life for a long time.
I'm really excited and just wanted to share. I've felt like such a loser for a while now...so just know that if you've had problems, things can always take a turn for the better!
