Ok, this is a bit weird and I am sure it has nothing to do with AS, but I wanted to throw it out there anyway :)

I have ALWAYS had trouble opening doors and gates! In the sense of not being able to work out how to do it, or not being able to open them for no reason. It has always baffled me and I cannot explain why I have this issue!

Does anyone else have this problem/know what it could be all about?

Is it a fine motor control/dyspraxia thing?

Same here. I can't understand it either.
It's not about motor skills...

I have this problem too. I have NVLD and always thought it was related to that...not understanding spatial relations. My motor skills are very underdeveloped....it could have something to do with motor planning/ dyspraxia-like issues.

I've always had problems with doors and gates too.
I don't know why.

I remember a "door problem" 10 years ago at the University. I had to leave the classroom while the teacher was talking, I wanted to be discrete but it was impossible to open the door. The teacher and the students watched me fighting with the door like 45 seconds. At last I opened it but I had to come back because I forgot my umbrella :?

I have similar problems with the doors of banks.

I have trouble with the department store clear automatic doors. Some are just fixed windows and some are doors that automatically open when someone is near them. I often stand in front of a fixed window and wait for it to open then realize it's not a door. It's a very brief embarrassment.

I have trouble sometimes in opening and going through gates & doors, as I think it's a fine motor-to-gross motor misalignment. In other words, I either walk against the door before the knob is turned all the way, or I begin to walk through it before it's open enough to fit, and then I catch an elbow painfully on the edge, etc.

Sort of.

It happens to me with new doors and also with doors that I know when I am in a hurry. Before I started to try pace myself because of accidents in which doors were involved in some way, I ran against doors a lot, pushed/pulled when I should have done the opposite, set of fire alarms (those that are attached to the knob) and broke a wooden door frame (the part where the locked lock prevents a door from being opened cracked) when I pushed my shoulder against a door that was locked.

At university where there are a lot of doors I tried to observe and memorise how others opened the doors. That way, most of the time I manage to avoid trying to open the part of double doors that won't open or to avoid pulling when I should be pushing.

Doors feel as if they're... interrupting me.

If I'm on my way to X and there's a door at Y in my way, it's as if I'm interrupted because I'll have to stop walking although I haven't made it to my destination yet, then make sure I open the door correctly/remember how to open this very door (and do it quickly in case someone else wants to use the door too) before I can finally resume walking.

I do the same thing. When I was in the NYC subway, I was trying to figure out the entrance gate where you slid your metro card. I was having so much trouble. People laughed at me yet no one took the time to help me out. Sure did make me feel wonderful

Something similar happened to me one day I was travelling by train. I had to go to a very small town and I was the only passenger of my wagon going there. The train arrived to that town and I went to the exit door. I had to push a button to open the door and leave the train but I didn't find the button, I went to another wagon and finally I saw the button, it was big and it was in front of my eyes  people was watching me all the time. I felt very idiot. I went to that town to do a brainy project and I couldn't find a button that was in front of my eyes. A few seconds more and I would have missed my stop.

It is oft joked about that I have no soul due to my inability to inspire automatic doors to open for me. Also, those barriers to get into the tube always seem to smash shut onto my hips. I am very nervous of them now. Concentrate...and run through!

With regards to automatic doors ,there is a bank here that has arrows pointing in the direction the automatic door will slide. Without fail, I stand to the left of the door, in front of the plain glass window, just where the arrows are pointing.

I also have the traditional "never push when it says pull" problem. Please, door installers, don't put a handle if you want me to push.
