What did you all think of the movie "Adam"? I thought it was sweet, the AS portrayal might have been a touch overdone, but for theatrical purposes it worked. I was disappointed with the ending though, it felt like the only romantic comedy/drama in history where the protagonists didn't get together in the end, and the reason they didn't was because of Adam's AS. I can't help but feel that it's putting us in a bad light, like the movie producers are saying people can't have relationships with people like us because we're too unpredictable and/or volatile. As much as I generally dislike romantic comedies because of their overused completely predictable plotline, it felt a little offputting to have the only movie that ever broke the mould be about a couple where the man had Asperger's, and not have things work out between them because of that fact. If they had broken up for a different reason, it wouldn't have been so bad.

To tell you the truth, considering our complex and non-traditional social issues, I'm utterly surprised some spectrumites actually go on dates, get married, have kids, etc. Me? I'm just totally blind to normalcy and am guaranteed to ruin any I attempt to get into a relationship. In a sense I felt relieved when Adam didn't get the girl. I think that's probably more realistic than if she did stick around. One thing I was uncomfortable with, though, was how practically every aspie stereotype was dumped on Adam. This makes it hard and contributes to people saying that others are not on the spectrum because they don't look or behave like Adam.

In other news, probably the most realistic film about someone with autism I've seen is the 2005 Korean film Marathon. Very sensitive and touching portrayal.

That's what I liked about this movie. It was realistic, not like the typical Hollywood movies.

Interesting, I've never heard of Marathon, I'll have to investigate...

Autistics don't get the girl because autistics don't fit in.

That was a bit disappointing, but they both seemed to end up happy in the end, both accomplishing their dreams, so I didn't mind too much. And it isn't the only one where the protagonists don't end up together, it didn't work out in 500 Days of Summer either. Weird thing is, those are my two favourite romances (and I usually don't like romance stories to begin with).

True, although if I remember correctly, in 500 Days of Summer, almost as soon as the guy loses Summer, he turns around and meets a girl named Autumn, so that was a fairly typical story in which the gilted NT can turn around and find someone new in a heartbeat. It's been a while since I saw that film though so I may be misremembering.

"Adam" was an authentic collection of my life experiences from different time periods, all bunched up into one character.

He's one of the more authentic portrayals of AS characters. Well, he and Chloe from "24".

I enjoyed it.

Can't wait for the Donna Williams film to come out as
there is a desperate need for the public to be made
aware that AS does not mean logic, literal, facts
driven, left brain oriented, but can also mean, colourful
wild, feeling, poetic and free-spirited.

Not many people can shatter the aspie stereotype so
wonderfully as Dona Williams, as her life and spirit
is a true testimony to the fact that there is difference
within difference, which sadly most films with characters
with AS sadly do not reflect this truth.

Well, its a movie.
I don´t think most Aspies behave like kids like Adam did, i never did stuff like when the girl lied to him and he went on rage.
