Throughout my years of traipsing through the internet, I have come across a great many customized advertisements, each of them supposedly "geared" to my own unique personal preferences. This sometimes amuses me, because the paradigms by which these advertisements appear to operate seems painfully primitive.

In any case, I was wondering if this held true for the members on here as well. I often wonder how these targeted advertisements get any click through rates at all. How do you see the advertisements that you come across online? Do you see them as annoying? A nuisance? Do you ever go, "oh! That looks neat!" and click them?

Thanks in advance,
Gamati.

the subtext went from "oh, they want to sell me more junk" or "oh,they want to steal my information" to "oh, they mined my info off of the internet and are using this stolen information to try and sell me junk."

hblu1992, I like how you summed it up so concisely. :D

I can never figure out who makes money off of the ads. If I figured that out, I'd probably be laughing about at least one party in the transaction, because the ads they send me are useless.

lol! I know what you mean, Palpatine!

On the flip side, the money is actually made by the owner of the website that is hosting the ads... hmm. Now that I think about it, I suppose if you really liked a website that provided a valuable service, you could click an ad once in a while. The money goes from some corporate bank account to the owner of the site.

I hadn't thought of that, actually. 8O

This is one reason why you should be careful about the webpages you look at and click on since your internet activity is constantly being tracked by various sources.

I use Chrome with adBlock, and AdBlock plus and I see no ads. Plus, I use FlashBlock and no videos start automatically.

I don't see online advertisements at all because like others, I find them an annoying intrusion - consequently, all of this noise is blocked by NoScript, AdBlock Plus and FlashBlock.

I don't think I have intentionally clicked on a banner ad since the early days of the WWW. These days, I have learned to tune out ads that can't be blocked, unless they are obnoxious enough that I simply reach for the "Back" button.

I normally have third party cookies disabled, so I don't get as many targeted ads on my desktop browsers. Unfortunately I can't find such a setting for mobile devices - and they creep me out sometimes. Internal ads, such as those on Facebook are still targeted, because all I need are more ads to remind me of the fact that I'm still single.

I wonder who would ever click any of those useless and sneaky-looking ads. There are times when I actually close the browser window itself because the ad in it enlarges itself and hides what I want to see and I find it very annoying. Those advertiser are not doing a good job. I don't know if they are customizing their ads to suit my interests because they are mostly really useless.

I see those as both an annoyance and a scam. I don't like that they pop out of nowhere, and I don't see a reason why I can "win" something by clicking on the ad; all I'm going to get is scammed anyway.

I pretty much don't notice the ads anymore. Never clicked any and never will. The ads that make sounds are HIGHLY annoying and loud, some even have music. I really hope WP will never get ads that makes noise. I will get adblocker if that ever happens.

That is why i block 3rd-party cookies. Those are where the tracking cookies from advertisers come from.
