Hey guys I want to say that my current special interest is well, not a healthy one and it's kinda taking over my mind and life. I don't want to go int detail for personal reasons but I really need to get rid of this obsession. Are tere any ways to stop a special interest that is not healthy? What tricks have you used? What helps you do with them?

Thank you very much :)

One thing that has helped me with unhealthy interests has been to strictly limit my time with them. If it's online you can use a blocking program and have it limit your time or you can block yourself from it. Offline you can set a timer and then stop when it goes off. This doesn't work if you don't have very much willpower though.

Enc is right, the best thing to do is probably to switch over to a different interest that takes up enough of your time and energy that you no longer have the urge to engage in your old, unhealthy one.

Hi CrazyRatLady -

I would either:
-Start a different obsession (resume an old obsession?)
-Find a new show on-line that has many seasons (I just got through Amazing Race series)
-Go to the library and find a quiet corner

I agree with trying to find a new special interest...that's usually what makes me forget about something I'm obsessed with, at least for a while. Usually, my special interests serve as my distraction from other things I normally obsess over that make me feel bad due to my depression and anxiety issues.

I had an obsession with sports stats that I couldn't break - so I smashed up my computer.

This is pretty much the only way I know. My interests get killed by other interests all the time.
