How would you rate your self-esteem? One definition of self-esteem being:

A realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself; self-respect.

Very high. I like myself.

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and... alright, not that many people like me. But I don't care.

I just say high. It USED to be VERY high. I'm trying to get back to that point.

It was really low until I found out I had AS. Before that I thought I was just a loser but now I know for all the struggles I've had at least there's an explanation and it's just not because I'm a failure. Knowing that it has helped some with my self esteem so it's better than it use to be.

I'm egotistical but I have low self-esteem anyway. How does that even work? I don't know, but it sucks.

Here's some irony for you. Whenever I ask these sorts of questions I think "Oh, high... but hang on, taking into account people's natural tendencies to overrate themselves I probably have slightly lower self esteem than that but believe it is higher. So maybe I have medium to low self esteem but are just overconfident in my self belief. Oh... Ok. Nevermind. High it is."

Middle of the road. Sometimes it's very high and other times, it's very low.

I'm very interested in this thread, because my 20 year old son just got dumped by his girlfriend, and we have been discussing by long-distance his lack of self-esteem.

As most parents feel, I don't understand how a great-looking, really funny, really smart guy can have such low self-esteem at times. Of course, the girlfriend dumping him didn't help at all, but she really was a twit, and he's had other girls show him attention, he just never paid them any thought because he had a girlfriend!

My question is -- if you have adjusted your thinking so that your self-esteem is higher, what influenced you to do so?

I sure as heck know it's not your MOTHER telling you you're great -- children never listen to their mothers . . .

Middle, this month is going too slow, I have fear I'm going to scare someone off I care about. If I do, I have another place I can stay at till I get my own place again.

Bill Gate's wrote in one of his books (that i did not read) how he thought it was a bad idea to teach kids to have higher self-esteem. Which I guess is possible you could boost alot of peoples self-esteem in an artfical way. People naturally increase their self-esteem by doing things right. Which is what Gate's said that kids should really do things that boost their self-esteem.

In my case I tend to be an inventor. And 99.9% of the time things fail and I do not keep trying. Those few times things have work I have had a smile from ear to ear
for hours. In my case what would boost my self-esteem is if I focused on any of my past projects (many are in front of my nose as i type) and got them to marketable condition I would be at the high self esteem level over night. I think inattentive ADHD is the physical mechanism preventing me from focus. Its very good at comming up with ideas but very bad at getting the sweat work done.

I have very poor self-esteem. I have a hard time being around others because I never feel adequate. Strangely, some people that know me say (I am just quoting, I do not attach meaning): You're so pretty! Scary smart! But, then, I feel lacking somehow. This forum site helps in that I realize there are autistics who struggle in the same way. Conversely, there are those who perceive me as "scary" because of my abilities/deficiets (ie: my memory, enhanced scenes). Mostly, I am overlooked because I am outside of normal paramters and very shy, awkward. Sometimes I cry in public places involuntarily (this does NOT help matters) - vicious cycle.

Medium. It used to be low, but then I got lots and lots of As in college courses, when I used to get Es or Ds in high school.

Mine varies between medium and low. It's never been high.

It varies a lot. Since I found out about AS it's been a little higher on average than previously.
