Is it for people that can't sleep with normal sheets when its too hot for blankets?

I don't have one, but I know that they're for the purpose of deep pressure for comfort. If you were the kind of kid who liked to squeeze into things when stressed (like between a couch and a wall) or if you're the kind of person who NEEDS heavy blankets in order to sleep, it might help. I know, as a kid, I liked to lay between my mattress and box spring, or under the cushions on the couch, and have been wondering myself if I might find a weighted blanket comforting. I bet it's like a big, cozy hug, that you can lay down for and don't need another person for. :D

They're usually used by people with sensory problems, like Sensory Processing Disorder.Sensory Integration.

I want one. I sleep better with a heavy comforter, but as you say, that's too warm in summer.

I hadn't heard of them before, but as soon as I saw the topic I had some idea. I remember as a child lying awake wishing I just had something heavy pushing down on me. Sometimes I like to be nestled into small spaces, and find it comforting and protected. These days to help me sleep I anchor myself with a stuffed animal under one arm. Even though I've lost almost all connection to the toy emotionally, it serves a function to help keep me from tossing and turning.

So I speculate that weighted blankets are to provide that security while trying to sleep, for those who need it.

I've always liked the feeling of being "bundled up" with blankets, pillows, stuffed animals or sofa cushions, too. One of my babysitters remembers how I would ask her to tuck the covers in all around me when she put me to bed, almost as if I was being swaddled. I have a Cars blanket and one of those heavy, knotted-edge fleece blankets with Finding Nemo characters on it. When it's cold in the dorms I live in during the school year, my Finding Nemo blanket on top of my Cars blanket is very comforting. More recently, I got a very soft, snuggly pink blanket for Christmas that actually trumped both the Cars and Nemo blankets for awhile. When I moved out of the dorms, I carefully packed my pink blanket away, so as to preserve its soft snuggliness. I'm back to using my Cars blanket everyday now. :D

Being wrapped in soft, cozy blankets like my Cars, Nemo, and fuzzy pink one while I'm in bed surrounded by stuffed animals is very comforting for me....it's like having a mother cradling you saying, "It's all right, dear....Mommy doesn't want you to feel anxious, depressed or scared....go to sleep now."

Oh, yes, I remember wanting that when I was a little girl, too! We called it being made into a burrito! :)

Yes to everyone. I really want one of these but can't find them any place but the internet. Does anyone have a good site that they can recommend from experience?

I had an old denim comforter-cover, and that was nice and heavy. Easy to use without the comforter. Never knew that there were other people who slept better that way.

Ooh! I love those things!

It feels like a million soft hands pressing against your skin and it is awesome! I wish I could get one...

from personal experience with them,can recommend TFH aka special needs toys;
http://www.specialneedstoys.com/usa/com ... anket.html
^click large size.
have bought various sensory toys from their UK department before, and woud still be buying if actualy had any money.

ROMPA does better weighted equipment-
http://www.rompa.com/sensory-integratio ... ghted.html
but they havent got an american department, bought a southpaw deep pressure bear hug vest from them years ago and still wearing it [wearing it in avatar], various sensory toys,a weighted legless rocking chair though dad had to adapt it because am to fast for it,and we also have a padded sensory room made by them here as well.

weighted equipment calms down the panicy fight or flight system in many of us and it feels extremely calming though just because its associated with autism doesnt mean everyone has the same sensory needs.

prior to buying specialist equipment had always laid under neath a heavy duty rug that took more than one person to lift and the beds had smashed up in rages [both the broken frame and mattress ontop] for deep pressure, but the SI equipment had stopped all that eventualy and had also been bought a mega awesome extra heavy duty waist coat by the residential center am in which has a ton of seperate removeable weights in them however one of the cats at home has become unseperable with it,practicaly stuck to it with sweat so have had to leave it with them till they lose their obsession, another obvious sign of cats being autistic.

I have one that I made from one of those fleece make-your-own-blanket kits and about 13 pounds of poly beads (little plastic thingers used to weigh down stuffed animals and such). It took quite a while to make it and the process was pretty frustrating: beads EVERYWHERE, breaking sewing needles on stray beads, very difficult to orient the blanket to sew it, etc. I definitely now understand why they cost so much.

Now that I have it it is pretty nice and comforting. Was always the type of person who smushed myself into the couch or slept with a ton of blankets. This blanket gives me the same stimulation, and it is pretty calming.

If you want to make a weighted blanket or clothing yourself, I found one of the cheaper places (at least to ship to the USA) for poly pellets is http://www.qualitypolypellets.com/
