Interesting - particularly the bit about autistic people being (mis)diagnosed as psychotic for much of the 20th century - I guess that happened up to the 1980s?

In 1980, when the DSM-III was released, the APA finally said that there was no apparent relationship between Autism and schizophrenia. Here is a quotation from the DSM-III:

Quote:
The relationship of this category [Infantile Autism] to Schizophrenia is controversial. Some believe that Infantile Autism is the earliest form of Schizophrenia, whereas others believe that they are two distinct conditions. However, there is apparently no increased incidence of Schizophrenia in the families of children with Infantile Autism, which supports the hypothesis that the two disorders are unrelated.

Things started improving with the DSM-III. The DSM-III-R might have been a bit of a step back (though I have mixed feelings about it). Then, Asperger's Disorder was introduced in the DSM-IV and the DSM-IV-TR.

Now, there is just one ASD. Having lived through the whole drama, I am pretty happy about it.
