I got an e-mail from the girl who's going to be my roommate in the dorms this coming semester at my college...apparently I'm going to be living in a different dorm than I have for the past couple of years, but I don't mind that much...anything would be better than having to live at home and deal with my stepmother's fat/body-shaming and general cross-ness in addition to the stress of school.
Anyway, I haven't replied to the e-mail quite yet cuz I'm still thinking of what I'll tell her....I'm actually happy about having a roommate this year. I haven't for the past couple of years, and I've actually been quite lonely and depressed in that period of time, too. Maybe having a roommate will alleviate some of that, even though I don't know her or anything about her at all.
....Well, I guess I'm off to reply to the e-mail she sent yesterday...I just hope she doesn't read my reply and think to herself, "My god, what am I getting myself into??"

Well, I can't speak for what it is like for girls being roommates, but as a guy, I have very much enjoyed rooming with people my last 3 years in college. I usually enjoy my interactions with the groups of guys that I have lived with, in comparison to most other interactions, which I usually find somewhat irritating. It's certainly better than living at home, that is for sure.
Anyways, I hope things go well with your new roommate. Assuming she isn't a total b***h, I imagine things will be fine.

Make sure you sign your own contract with her. I'm not referring to the lease, but a short, simple agreement stating that she intends to pay and basically live up to her promises. Have the both of you sign it and then get it notarized. I learned this from my wife, she says it's a good way to not get f****d over. She did it with people in the past.
Be careful. There are a lot of people who will take advantage of you, examples ranging from her only buying food for herself, skipping out on rent (I've had people who had jobs move in and then get "laid off" shortly after moving it and lie about making effort to find a new job), and other reasons, such as stealing. I've only had one roommate who actually did make effort to clean around the apartment, and overall was a great roommate. He moved in the day I kicked out the previous roommate, who (among other people he constantly had kicking it with us) left the place in a f***ing mess, and he spent the first few hours there helping me clean the place thoroughly and making it spotless, and only sitting down in the apartment for the very first time after we were finished.

Agreed. Establishing boundaries / expectations is job 1. Rearguard maneuvers are way more effort.

I'm sure you'll say just the right thing, and I'm happy for you to be getting a roommate this year.
You're post reminded me of something I read in a book not too long ago. It was called "She's Come undone" and was a really good book by Wally Lamb, if you are interested in reading it. It was funny because the main character was going away to college for the first time, her mother had recently died and she didn't want to go but was being forced to go by her grandmother because it was her mother's dream for her. (I know this isn't your situation, and you wouldn't do this, but when you said you didn't know what to reply, I just thought of that part of the book). She got a letter from this really perky roommate and didn't think the roommate would like her, so since she had a few months before college she created this entire fake character of who she was. Didn't tell her one true thing about herself except her name. She was perky like the roommate, interested in the same things, her parents were together and I think he was a doctor or something according to the letter. She got there and was nothing like the letters and the roommate flipped out, but then other events happened and you'll have to read the book to find that out. But, it was the writing to the roommate that made me think of it. I know you wouldn't do that at all, but it's sort of funny to think of, from the standpoint of the book, and the things that happened later on in it.
