How do the topics work?

I notice that the order of the threads change. How does it work? I'll look for a thread and the next day I might find it in a very different place on the list.

If I went to General Autism Discussion right now and created a new post on an old thread, that old thread would now show up as the first thread just below the sticky threads (which don't move).
