I found this image this morning, and I want to hear what people think

http://i.imgur.com/JvucnR2.jpg

It's quite rare to hear autism/aspergers used in the way that OCD is used (as described in the picture), but I have seen it done occasionally on the internet. How would people feel if it became more common?

It might de- stigmatize Asperger's a bit, but I wouldn't like it. I, personally, hate it when someone says "Like,OMG! I had a freakin' panic attack!" I actually do have anxiety attacks and I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy (if I had one). I don't think that OCD should be joked about, either, for that matter. I hate it when people tell me how "OCD" I am acting! I have heard people say, in real life, "Oh, yeah, he's just an Ass- Burger!" or say "I was walking all wobbly like I had asperger's or something". It makes me uncomfortable and embarrassed. What is your opinion?

mmm... just the opinion of a grumpy old man, but self righteous blowhards like this guy... make me RUN away. The world isn't going to get educated... it isn't going to get sensitive, and it isn't going to take everyone's troubles all seriously. Did you ever see this cartoon by Gary Larson?

I like this image. The only time I hear autism used in this way is actually offensive, in which people do something stupid, and call someone autistic. Autism isn't an insult. I also think it's offensive when people look at a small school bus that has kids who have special needs that need to be met in them, and some NT's say jokingly, "Oh, wait short bus, you forgot me! I'm one of them!" People joking about any neurological differences actually does make me angry, and especially when I hear it about Autism, because I have just learned a lot about it ever since I started Asperger's testing.

Limited knowledge shouldn't make people rude.

I get the impression you misread what the guy said, but then I also get the impression that you are actually offended by the idea that people may wish to be treated with more respect, which is a disturbing perspective to take.

I'm okay with the guy... but his friend who gets angry at people who use OCD as slang is hard on me... these days there are so many people who want their problem recognized and respected.

But then the guy goes on and on about it and ends up thinking it's funny I guess that at this point he can use the sensitive word "ret*d" makes me want to run for the exit. Comprendes?

The thing I like about this is that I probably would get uncomfortable if people used the word aspergers or autism imprecisely, but I myself use words like lame, dumb, moron and ret*d in everyday speech all the time, which as the image points out is pretty hypocritical.

I also would like to point out, as I'm not sure if we're all on the same page, is that the guy in the image isn't arguing that we should avoid all these words being used casually, but that we should try and be okay with all of them.

Agreed. He is illustrating what we've moved past culturally, not attempting to numb people in terms of their derision's effects. Plus, I can imagine plenty of mentally impaired individuals I'm beyond sure could get a laugh from this. Laughs are good nearly all the time, unless at the expense of those sufficiently present to take offense.

The guy's pretty funny. People need to lighten up and stop taking everything so terribly seriously. I'd never heard of him before, but now I've checked out his Twitter as well.

This is all about social skills.

If you have enough of them you are going to laugh about it, if not, you'll take offense.

It is good to have social skills to survive, but I kind of wish it was the other way round.

There is no right or wrong in this world, no universal moral, only things that are good for survival and things that are bad for survival. So only in that sense are there rights and wrongs.

Ah, I totally misunderstood you then. Your wording confused me. Si, comprende.

No, this is not about social skills. I know people who are quite socially skilled who have similar reactions to mine toward such humor (that is, quite negative) and there are people here who have social impairments who find it funny.

A lot of terms have lost their original meaning beyond the years.

An 3xample is the word "ret*d".
Originally, it only meant "slow", but then it started to be used even as a synonim for "mentally challenged".

I don't get offended when people call me "ret*d" because I actually am slow.

It kind of reminded me of the comedian Doug Stanhope, who says some very shocking and offensive things. Even though I don't agree with a lot of the stuff he says, I still find it very funny.

I don't think its about making fun of people or offending anyone. Its more about trying not to take things so seriously in life. I think we could all use a little more laughter in our lives.

I don't understand where social skills come in on how you'd view this. It's less about morality than going overboard on the PC wagon, I think. Exaggerating for comedic effect is common, and there is a line between this example and someone being downright offensive.
