Early Childhood Intervention
I guess this is more for myself than anyone else, but here goes (WARNING: IT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE LONG):
I looked through my parents' filing cabinet and found that I had an IEP when I was three till I was eight years old. I knew that I had a learning disability when I was young, but some peculiar things popped up in my evaluation that make me wonder if it was more than a Speech and Language Delay/LD (I think it would be a bit early to figure out high-functioning autism at this age):
3 Years:
*Auditory comprehension was low (2nd percentile)
*Expressive communication was low (16th percentile)
*"She enjoyed stringing beads and drawing on a magnetic board, and showed a curiosity about many of the classroom toys."
*"During the half hour that I observed Dedi, she used approximately six spontaneous utterances. Three of these were unintelligible; the others were "yeah," "orange," and "turtle." Imitatively she said "up," "you do," "king on" (imitating one of the other children), and "say bye" (when she was asked to say "bye"). Jargon and echolalia continue to be a large part of Dedi's expressive communication at this time."
*Gross and fine motor skills were fine
*"Dedi has a temper when she's frustrated in trying to speak or communicate her needs."
*"She will imitate almost anything her parents say."
*"She attended [to intervention services] twice weekly to improve overall social communication skills including vocabulary, use of 2-3 word phrases and intelligibility, and also to decrease echolalia and improve eye contact."
*No problem with parents leaving
5 1/4 years:
*"This is a delightful, pleasant and cooperative girl."
*"She is also somewhat easily distracted by extraneous noise or background noise."
*"She has strong visual skills."
*"Dedi's performance on the DAS reveals marked variability between verbal and nonverbal abilities. Her age equivalents on subtests ranged from 3 years and 7 months to greater than 8 years and 9 months."
*"[On a sentence recall task] This task was very difficult. Dedi used jargon, rambled, and had trouble recalling the right words. Example: Examiner- "I fell and hurt myself." Dedi - "I don't feel so hurt.""
*"On a speech sample of 80 utterances, Dedi used jargon in 17 or 21% of them. This is highly unusual for someone her age."
*"Dedi joins in with her peers during play and follows their lead; she is accepted and well-liked by the other children." (But I wonder if this is with NT children because I remember having problems later on in life with NT kids)
*"Word order in describing events or activities is often disordered, such as "I get from my movie my Christmas""
*"Dedi has made noticeable progress in verbal expressive skills and now interacts more with her peers in cooperative and dramatic play situations...although she becomes slightly withdrawn or reticent at times when tasks are difficult and involve verbal communication skills."
8 1/4 years:
*"Dedi appeared to be a very fluent writer, and she showed writing skills within or above grade expectations."
*"Dedi appeared to be developing math skills well above grade level expectations."
*Some talk on transitioning services
*"Dedi appears to have some difficulties with the comprehension of higher level language structures and more abstract concepts."
*"Her verbal expression skills are her strength."
*I was finally transitioned off the IEP and ended up in the Gifted and Talented program the next school year.
As an added bonus: My 5th grade report card reported a 2 out of 4 for "Respect." I was heavily teased at the time (and wouldn't be afraid to show that I was pissed), so I can't blame myself.
...Now to wait 2 weeks for my neuropsych results!
Expressive communication was 6th percentile, not 16th. I apologize.
Are all HF Autistics difficult as children? I wouldn't think so, as Autism is a pretty diverse set of symptoms. I don't remember being that difficult except when I was being teased. Whenever I did get difficult in front of my parents, they would send me to my room. I felt that my feelings weren't validated back then. I still feel that way.
I don't think I have any report cards from kindergarten.
My mother remembers some things that my teacher told her: apparently, I was quite aloof at the time, not interested in people and easy to temper trantums.
The oldest report card I have is from 1st grade:
The new student coming from a new school (I had to change school in 1st grade in December) has adapted to the new environment. She doesn't display many hostile feelings towards classmates or teachers.
chlov comes across as a little shy and introverted at first. She appears quite reserved in communication.
chlov shows a certain tendency towards self-isolation and introversion. During the break, she often sits in a chair, observing her classmates while they play, but may accept a classmate's suggestion to play with her.
chlov usually takes part in group discussions, but often expresses her thoughts at the wrong moment, interrupting other kids or teachers. She shows some trouble in communication, and sometimes stops talking in the middle of a sentence, as if she had to think about what to say next.
chlov reaches high results in the subjects she likes the most, but has trouble with other subjects. She often deepens on her own with readings or reasearches the topics she shows interest in.
chlov hasn't got much sense of direction, and often gets lost in school if not accompanied by a teacher or a classmate.
chlov has issues with both fine and gross motor skills. She can't hold a pencil or a fork correctly, and has problems with her handwriting. She doesn't take part in group sports or does reluctantly.
chlov is quite messy and often loses or forgets pens, pencils, or jackets. Her desk is covered with lots of paper and books and has some issues getting organized and paying attention, unless the class is discussing a topic she has interest in.
chlov sometimes forgets to do her homework.
chlov sometimes squirms in her seat, fidgets or produces squeals with her throath.
chlov may have some anger outbursts or temper trantums sometimes, and when this happens she usually runs out of the classroom and hides in the toilette. She doesn't get back unless a teacher goes to get her back.
chlov is willing to engage in group work only with a handful of classmates she knows better, and prefers working on her own. She has a tendency to ignore her classmates, exept those she knows better and likes the most.
chlov's overall performance is a avarage; she appears truly motivated to learning only in those subjects she has interest in, but scores below-avarage or just avarage in those other subjects she is not interested in and has more difficulties in.
The one from 2nd grade was pretty much the same, exept that I had gotten a little better with organization.
From 3rd grade to 5th grade they wrote that I did my homework even less and I had started to be quite hostile towards classmates and teachers, probably because I had started to develop ODD.
However, in 4th grade I managed to make 2 friends.
In 6th, 7th and 8th grade I had no friends and I started to have some friends in 9th grade.
