Does anyone know if alzheimers is more likely in people with aspergers?
My grandfather had alzheimers, I'm watching my uncle, and mom for it, I think my mom has early signs.
Preventative things I can do for myself now?
Thoughts? Leads? Articles?
thanks.

I found about 270 scientific papers that mention both Alzheimer's and either autism or Asperger's. I didn't want to read them all, so I searched within those results for either association or correlation. Nothing. Looks like that research hasn't been done.

There has been some speculation that aluminium might contribute to Alzheimer's but I don't think that ever was conclusive. Avoid aluminium cookware if you want to be on the safe side. It's supposed to be a good thing to build up a cognitive reserve by doing cognitively demanding things. Learning a foreign language or two is supposed to be good.

I remember recently hearing an interview with a researcher who had worked out how to reverse Alzheimer's in mice. I don't remember the source. The transfer of basic research to clinical application usually takes 20 to 30 years, but if you are young enough it's still reassuring.

There are some genes that increase your risk for Alzheimers. To find out if you are carrying those genes, send a spit sample and 99$ to www.23andme.com They are a company that analyzes peoples' DNA for risk factors to a multitude of diseases. They are reputable and are used by genetic researchers as a databank for figuring out disease risk but only if you give permission for your DNA to be used.

If you find out that you are carrying those genes, this does not mean you will get it. It means your risk is higher. They give you an estimate of risk and also things you can do to counter that risk. There are also message boards where people carrying those genes post the latest research relevant to to their genes and Alzheimers.

I did this. I am carrying genes that put me at higher risk. I have joined that message board and we share ways to lessen the risk we inherited. One of the things is avoiding all trans fats like the poison they are.

www.23andme.com It is so worth it.

I think there was (were) a thread(s) a few months ago about autism (or AS) and Alzheimer's disease. You might want to try to find it (them). It (they) might have been deleted or at least locked for some reason. So you might not find it (them).

I think autistic people tend to be loners and one of the causes of mental deterioration (or Alzheimer's) at old ages is a lack of interaction with other people. So there might be an indirect link between autism and Alzheimer's disease. This is my own theory.

Autism genes seem to run in my family but I don't think there's anyone in my family who got Alzheimer's.

So many diseases have asked to be ''more likely'' with people with Asperger's on this site.

The answer is no, otherwise Asperger's would be a killer disease itself. People with Asperger's are just as healthy as the next person, and have just as much chance as anyone else of getting a disease. The only conditions that are more likely with those with Asperger's is anxiety, depression, OCD, those sorts of things.
