I think my brain works in three types of ways. (Huey, Dewey, and Louie?) :D

The first way my brain works is pretty uncontrolled. I think this evolved from prehistoric times when hesitation could mean your death. I see this type of uncontrolled thought displayed mostly as anger. Many times getting angry is the first and automatic response to many situations. It doesn't require any "thinking", it just happens. Sometimes almost before I notice it. Mindfulness helps control this.

The second way my brain works is much more useful. I think of this as "thought-without-conscious thought." Pretty awkward sounding but this is letting my unconscious do my thinking and help with problem solving without step-by-step logical thought. I find this awkward to explain as it happens without words, but it's the most used and always, runs, analyzing my physical and mental environment almost constantly. I believe this mode can also be the most tiring for me as often I'm left with unpleasant conclusions (example: "These people don't like me") without firm reasoning behind my conclusion. Sometimes it's obvious emotion is running the show here, but with a tip of the hat to reasoning and logic.

The last way I see my thought process working is using the above noted "step-by-step logical thought" process and, using a mental version of speech, slowly but surely working out out the details of my object of thought. This is by far the slowest method but comforting because it is fully "in control" and these thoughts are much easier to review. This is what I use when I post.

I keep saying "my" above but firmly believe everyone uses these 3 methods, either consciously or unconsciously. Although I figured this out some time ago I see there are many who also believe this to be their mental "map" as well.
