Hi, hopefully I've posted this in the right forum.

I'm going to be going for a mental health assessment (not just for Asperger's syndrome but also for depression and social anxiety) and I'm just wondering about a few things.

What exactly does such an assessment involve? Also, roughly how long would I have to wait before the assessment takes place?

I've heard that in America it includes a physical examination but not in the UK. What is the case in Ireland?

I've told the doctor about having suicidal thoughts and self-harming. How in depth will I be asked about that?

Thanks for any helpful answers.

Don’t be put off by the lack of response to your queries, I don’t think folk on wrong planet are familiar with any medical procedures in Ireland.

Although it wasn’t a full out diagnosis of autism, I was told I had Aspergers when I stayed in Strabane co.tyrone by two doctors, they were really helpful.

If you are lucky they should take care of you where you are, it’s much better than in England.

Things seem to get done quicker in Ireland than England when it comes to medical situations.

Hello. I have nothing to do with Ireland (I'm in W. Australia) but because not many people have responded so far, I just wanted to say something.

I noticed that when your post has a location-specific query, few people tend to respond unless it's a very common location. Only one person responded to mine when I tried it.

I think there was one Irish man who posted about his diagnosis a few months (or half a year ago maybe). His seemed to have gone smoothly with not too long a wait. A few sessions of interviews. I think his mother was also interviewed for his diagnosis. I hope he will find this thread. He isn't on WP very often.

I think you might be asked in-depth questions about certain life experiences if it's relevant to your diagnosis. In my experience of going through a diagnosis process here in W. Australia there was no physical exam.

You can also go through other threads on this forum because diagnosis-related questions are very common. You may find some useful information there.
